Mom Has Cancer. Her Son Reacts.

By  Donna Trussell - Politics Daily
Mom Has Cancer. Her Son Reacts.

My friend Julie Levine had everything I lacked: A charmed childhood, beautiful kids. I might have envied her had she not been the nicest person I ever met. And, therefore, a magnet for cancer. (On an Internet bulletin board I once frequented, we joked that compassion and a zest for living were risk factors.) Julie is eight years younger than me, so I assumed she would someday speak at my funeral. Especially once I received a diagnosis of stage III ovarian cancer in 2001. Julie came to my hospital room. She took me to chemo. She and her mother came to my house bearing brisket, fudgy peanut ...

Britain Freezes Sales of Breast Milk Ice Cream

Britain Freezes Sales of Breast Milk Ice Cream

British officials have stopped a London ice cream parlor from selling a frozen dairy treat made from human breast milk amid concerns that the unusual dessert may not be safe. The Icecreamists parlor introduced the "Baby Gaga" flavor Feb. 25. The flavor's creator told told AOL Weird News that the ice cream was as much food for thought as actual food. "Some people are turned off by the idea, but, really, it raises the philosophical question: Is it better if we use milk from cows injected with hormones who are artificially induced with pregnancy every few months, or human milk?" Matt O'Connor ...

Natalie Portman's Motherhood Shout-Out Gets Raves From This Feminist

Natalie Portman's Motherhood Shout-Out Gets Raves From This Feminist

Natalie Portman has been getting flack for her Academy Awards acceptance speech for her role in "Black Swan." Not because of anything she said about the uber-psych-thriller role that won her the award or because of any Oscar night faux pas like forgetting to acknowledge her fellow Best Actress nominees. She's coming under fire for a speech that acknowledged her nascent motherhood as "the most important role" of her life, referring to her ever-growing pregnancy, which I must say was beautifully draped in a luscious plum-colored Rodarte gown that I wouldn't mind owning. Some women are ...

London Ice Cream Parlor Creates 'Baby Gaga' Flavor From Human Breast Milk

London Ice Cream Parlor Creates 'Baby Gaga' Flavor From Human Breast Milk

A London ice cream parlor is titillating its customers with a new flavor made from human breast milk. The restaurant is called the Icecreamists and the new flavor, which is named "Baby Gaga," goes on sale Friday and is made from a mix of cream made from 75 percent human breast milk and 25 percent cream from old Bossy herself. Oh, and some Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest to make it fancy. Cheesy as the concept sounds, Icecreamists founder Matt O'Connor sees Baby Gaga as food for thought as much as consumption. Taylor Herring A London ice cream parlor is titillating ...

Are Chinese Mothers Superior or Too Strict?

By  Helena Andrews - Politics Daily
Are Chinese Mothers Superior or Too Strict?

There was only one rule in the Andrews camp when I was a kid: you have to try everything. My mother's mission statement forced me to try exotic foods, outfielding in Little League, selling Girl Scout cookies and riding in airplanes. Rule No. 2? You can quit anything anytime. I invoked that inalienable right when it came to soccer, opera and Kung Pao chicken. But according to Amy Chua, law Professor and mother of two, I might have been the next Pele, Marian Anderson or Kung Fu Panda. In her view, the fact that I was never forced to find out is what's wrong with "Western parents." They just ...

Motherhood Becomes an Issue in Oklahoma Governor's Race

Motherhood Becomes an Issue in Oklahoma Governor's Race

EDMOND, Okla. (Oct. 23) - In her quest to become Oklahoma's first female governor, Democrat Jari Askins has amassed an assortment of professional qualifications: she's been a judge, a legislator, the head of a state agency, and a corporate attorney. Alonzo Adams, AP During their debate Tuesday, Republican Mary Fallin, right, said the fact that she has children and her Democratic opponent Jari Askins, left, does not is an important difference between the candidates for governor of Oklahoma. But what she hasn't been is a wife. The 57-year-old career woman, who now serves as the state's ...

Mother's Day? No, Try Goddess Day

Mother's Day? No, Try Goddess Day

That's what my husband has nicknamed Mother's Day. He takes me out to eat and he calls me a goddess, since we have no children. Before you start retching, let me add that it's a miracle we made it to 33 years. Marriage is hard, as my colleague Delia Lloyd eloquently explained in her post, More Wives Should Dump Their Husbands. Delia was moved to write by the sad tale of Silda Spitzer, who literally stood by her man when her husband Eliot Spitzer resigned his post as New York governor. ...

Best Age to Have a Baby: A) Before 26? B) After 26? C) Never?

Best Age to Have a Baby: A) Before 26? B) After 26? C) Never?

What's a gal (who wants kids) to do? If we choose to have children when we're young, pregnancy, in this country, makes us poorer, less employable, and diminishes our lifetime earning potential. If we wait, as so many of us are wont to do, we're likelier to shell out big bucks for fertility interventions, or miss our window. If we're body conscious, we might as well not get pregnant at all, at least according to Jillian Michaels, celebrity trainer on the "Biggest Loser," who's gone on record with her own fear of what "doing that" (becoming pregnant) will do to her admirably taut body. She ...

Sarah Silverman: Crude Comedian With a Certain Feminist Flair

Sarah Silverman: Crude Comedian With a Certain Feminist Flair

In case any of you ladies missed it, I thought I'd point you toward Terry Gross' insightful -- and delightful -- interview with the polarizing comedian Sarah Silverman. The comedian was on Gross' NPR talk show, "Fresh Air," last week to discuss her new memoir, "The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption and Pee." Gross aptly described Silverman -- and her crude brand of comedy -- when she introduced her as a woman whose "comedy may seem offensive to Jews, African-Americans, Latinos, gay people, you name it, but that's because she's in persona as someone who is clueless, uninformed but ...

Opinion: Pediatricians Need to Get With the Breastfeeding Program

Opinion: Pediatricians Need to Get With the Breastfeeding Program

(April 6) -- When my first daughter was born, I was a little taken aback when our very old-school pediatrician demanded to know whether I would breast- or bottle-feed her. This seemed like an intrusive question from a doctor who made it abundantly clear that I should be breastfeeding. And yet, as my newborn and I struggled through the whole strange new dance of latching on and suckling, I persisted mainly because I knew my doctor would pester me again with that same question at our follow-up visit. And I wasn't about to admit failure. Given my own experience, I naturally assumed that every ...
