Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Sept. 29) -- Good help (that won't come back and cause you trouble as you seek political office) is hard to find. Today, California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's former housekeeper, an undocumented worker, held a news conference to detail her mistreatment "as a longtime, Latina household employee" in the Republican nominee and former eBay CEO's home. The veracity of the claims remains uncertain. The housekeeper is represented by celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, who Whitman's campaign has called a "shameful manipulator." The scenario in which a prospective politician's former ...
President Obama spent yesterday, Tax Day, railing against our current system of revenue collection, declaring that filing a tax return is too confusing and expensive for working American families.Later in the day, the President released his own tax return, which shed a little light on what motivated his morning speech. The damn thing is 67 pages long! But thanks to the twin miracles of technology and public disclosure, Obama's entire return is up on the internet. So if you've always wanted to see what a presidential 2210 form looks like, well now you can.Of course Obama probably wasn't thinking ...
You know, the real tragedy of all of this is that we got my father-in-law Daschle's book for Christmas. Now he read it for nothing. I don't have a lot to say except WTF!?!!!! Please see my rant from day 11. Did Nancy and Tom just completely forget to fill out section IV of the 63 question application? No pluses, 3 minuses and one wash. Kind of. Bad day, President Obama. Check out the running tally and learn more about this list here. Day Event + - = ...
It looks like someone just sold Barack Obama a load of goods. This morning he nominated New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg for Commerce Secretary, a standard Obama pick in the sense that Gregg is a Republican. But the qualifications stop there. The rumor circulating Washington as we speak is that - and this is big folks - Gregg might have paid all of his taxes dating back to time immemorial!Surely a mistake has been made. Didn't Gregg neglect to pay social security taxes and employ an illegal housekeeper, like Timothy Geithner? Didn't he forget to pay $946 in employment taxes on household workers ...
The White House has just released this statement:(via email) Letter from Nancy Killefer to President Obama Dear Mr. President, I recognize that your agenda and the duties facing your Chief Performance Officer are urgent. I have also come to realize in the current environment that my personal tax issue of D.C. Unemployment tax could be used to create exactly the kind of distraction and delay those duties must avoid. Because of this I must reluctantly ask you to withdraw my name from consideration. I am deeply honored to have been selected by you and you have my deep appreciation for your ...
Calling H&R Block! Nancy Killefer, President Obama's pick to be the "Chief Performance Officer" to oversee government efficiency, has officially withdrawn her nomination due to a host of issues, including income tax problems. Read her letter to Obama here. Incredibly, Killefer is now the third Obama nominee to run afoul of federal income tax laws. My advice to Obama is to politely ask Tom Daschle and Timothy Geithner to step aside so that individuals who do not have tax skeletons in their closets can step forward and serve our government in this difficult time. To paraphrase a reader of this ...
Via CNN:Two Democratic officials confirm Nancy Killefer will be unveiled as chief performance officer, a newly-created position focused on bringing back fiscal order. Given the amount of money that Obama plans to pour into a new and improved stimulus package to try and help resuscitate our nation's moribund economy, it does seem wise to hire a person in this capacity. One of the truly rotten aspects of the Bush/Paulson stimulus packages was the lack of accountability whereby nobody seemed to be able to say what, exactly, rescued bands and financial institutions were using taxpayer money ...
