Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The National Rifle Association says it has Sarah Palin to thank for a 20 percent jump in female membership. Calling it the "Palin effect," the NRA's Diane Danielson told the Daily Mail that the former Alaska governor's vocal advocacy of gun rights is helping the group teach "10,000 new women a year to shoot, and making more girls want to take up hunting." Palin, the GOP vice presidential nominee in 2008, has bragged about her ability to field dress a moose and was often seen hunting on her reality television show. "Firearm manufacturers are gearing their products towards women. ...
This year marks the 100th "birthday" of one of America's most successful and culturally impactive political tools: the 1911 .45 semi-automatic pistol. Yet this is not just a story about a gun. Though, of course, this story stars and starts with that gun. Or rather, our need for it that emerged when U.S. armed forces fought Muslim insurgents on Asian turf that most Americans have trouble finding on a map. As most of us remember -- especially fans of Mark Twain and Rudyard Kipling -- from 1899-1913, the United States fought the Philippine-American War for control of those Pacific islands. In ...
Julia Hurley didn't take what some might consider a traditional path into the world of politics. In fact, the Republican state representative credits her tenure serving up burgers as a waitress at the Hooters restaurant chain with developing her skills as a businesswoman and public figure. "I have taken quite a bit of flak from the public at large during my run for State House in Tennessee for being a Hooters Girl," she wrote in the latest edition of the Hooters magazine. "But I know that without that time in my life I would not be as strong-willed and eager to become successful." Surge ...
Bill Maher made a memorable appearance on "The Tonight Show" Tuesday night, telling Jay Leno that the National Rifle Association "should just change their name to the Assassin's Lobby." Maher went on to say that he was "tired of hearing about the Second Amendment. If you love guns, just admit it, it's like a vice. It's like alcohol or drugs or sex addiction or gambling." The remarks came after Leno asked the "Real Time" host for his take on the recent Tucson, Ariz., shootings. "Tonight Show" audience members didn't seem to know how to react, exactly. In the clip below you can hear some very ...
A shotgun blast of news this year shredded what most Americans believe about what used to be called the "war on drugs" -- that it was being fought to curb what were seen as simply criminal enterprises. Instead, it left us all facing the new dangers of narco-politics, whether it is cartels challenging governments and attacking social institutions, capitalizing on corruption, or involvement in the drug trade by terrorist groups. As a veteran California law enforcement officer told Politics Daily: "What we're seeing in Mexico is cartels as new 'state making' agencies." That's politics, even if, ...
Help for some imperiled Democrats is coming from a place where many of the party faithful might least expect it -- the National Rifle Association, sworn foe of the gun-control cause. The NRA, a non-partisan organization that traditionally leans heavily toward the Republican side, has endorsed 58 incumbent House Democrats, including a dozen in key seats viewed as critical in the party's struggle to hold its majority, the Washington Post reports. The gun lobby, which can make a difference in any district that is home to a fair amount of hunters and sportsmen, isn't flirting with the Democratic ...
(Sept. 7) -- A bloody, drug-fueled war is being waged just across the border in Mexico and a report out Tuesday finds that 90 percent of the guns traced from Mexican crime scenes since 2006 have originated in the United States. The report was released by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group of more than 500 mayors from American towns and cities, and was based primarily on data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The new findings reinforce previous estimates while contradicting claims made last year by several news organizations, including Fox News and the Examiner, ...
Senate Republicans blocked a bill Tuesday that would force American companies and interest groups to disclose their roles in federal elections more than ever before. Democrats failed to end the Republican filibuster of the DISCLOSE Act on a 57-41 vote, essential ending the bill's chances for passage this year. All Republicans opposed the bill, while nearly all Democrats voted in favor of it. Democrats needed 60 votes to move it to final consideration. Democrats wrote the bill in early 2010 to blunt the effects of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Citizens United v. FEC, which ...
(July 13)--After winning recent battles in the courts and Congress, the National Rifle Association is looking to influence more than narrow gun issues, The New York Times reports Tuesday. Some examples: In the health care debate this year, for instance, the NRA's lobbyists worked with the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, to include a little-noticed provision banning insurance companies from charging higher premiums for people with guns in their homes. The NRA worked out a deal last month exempting itself from a proposal requiring groups active in political spending to disclose their ...
CHICAGO (July 2) - The Chicago City Council on Friday approved what city officials say is the strictest handgun ordinance in the nation, but not before lashing out at the Supreme Court ruling they contend makes the city more dangerous because it will put more guns in people's hands. The new ordinance bans gun shops in Chicago and prohibits gun owners from stepping outside their homes, even onto their porches or in their garages, with a handgun. It becomes law in 10 days, Corporation Counsel Mara Georges said. The vote comes just four days after the high court ruled Americans have the right ...
