Powerful Tornado Rips Through Small Iowa Town [VIDEO]

MAPLETON, Iowa -- Jamy Garden's house began to rumble with the approach of a tornado that at one point measured three-quarters of a mile wide. Then the windows shattered, spraying her with glass. Using her cellphone as a flashlight, she fled to her basement and called her grandparents in tears. On Sunday, she returned home, wandering her backyard in a blood-splattered hooded sweat shirt, her right hand and left knee wrapped in gauze. Around her lay a tangle of tree branches, twisted siding, broken glass and a canoe that wasn't hers. The tornado that struck the evening before ...

See Cool Photos and Video From the Mount Etna Volcano Eruption

Europe's most famous volcano awoke from its sleep this week. Mount Etna, located on the southern Italian island of Sicily, gushed lava down its slopes and spewed ash and smoke into the air on Wednesday night, forcing authorities to briefly close two airports in the area. A statement from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the volcano continued to display "rather weak" activity as of this morning. Mount Etna is one of the planet's most active volcanoes, infamous for killing some 15,000 people when it erupted in 1185 and destroying 10 villages in 1669. Check out ...

Tsunami, Eruption Wreak Havoc in Indonesia

(Oct. 27) -- Indonesian authorities have launched two rescue operations after a tsunami crashed into an island chain and a volcano erupted less than 24 hours later, leaving at least 300 people dead and thousands more homeless. Entire villages were washed away Monday when a 7.7-magnitude earthquake split the ocean floor near the Mentawai islands, 80 miles off Sumatra's west coast. The 10-foot waves generated by that rupture have killed at least 272 people so far, officials told The Associated Press. The relief agency World Vision is reporting that more than 500 people are missing. "We need ...

Colorado's Fourmile Canyon Fire: When Community -- and Twitter -- Matter

BOULDER, Colo. -- This week, my community is experiencing the worst fire in the state's history. So far, almost 140 homes and other buildings have been destroyed; many families -- including those of several firefighters -- have lost everything. About 3,000 people are staying with friends and family or at hotels as 6,150 acres in the scenic but rugged mountains burn. Fortunately, there are no injuries or deaths thus far, though four people are missing. Since the first smell of smoke and a glance at the strange amber-colored sunlight at around 11 a.m. Monday, following the fire has consumed ...

Pakistan: Vignettes of Misery

(Aug. 18) -- The flood catastrophe in Pakistan is worse than the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia, the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, one United Nations official has said. The Montreal Gazette reports that the U.N. has appealed for $460 million in aid for the estimated 20 million who have been affected since the monsoons hit on July 29. But beyond the numbers are the personal struggles of the victims. AOL News looks at a few of them. The Farmer The floods not only destroyed Ibrahim Khan's peach crop, but his farmland became merely a collection of water, mud and ...

Burma's Disasters

By  Justin Paulette - Politics Daily
Burma's Disasters

Burma or Myanmar? One cannot even speak of the beleaguered nation without making a political statement. Burma is the nation's traditional name, yet the military junta which conquered the small country imposed a new name: Myanmar. Those who deny the legitimacy of the dictatorship use the traditional moniker, while nations bowing to sentiments of appeasement recognize Myanmar. Burma has now suffered a "major disaster," according to UN officials - which is, if anything, an understatement of the horrors wrought by Cyclone Nargis. Rough estimates count the dead at somewhere between 22,000 - 50,000. ...
