Swarm of Quakes Rattles Arkansas Residents and Seismologists

Dozens of small earthquakes have rattled towns in Arkansas in the past few days, puzzling seismologists who say the exact cause of the tremors is unclear. The U.S. Geological Service has reported at least 40 earthquakes in the northern Arkansas towns of Greenbrier and Guy this week -- 18 on Wednesday alone. Since October, the area has seen nearly 700 earthquakes. No injuries or damage have been reported. The earthquakes, although small -- generally ranging from 1.8 to 3.5 in magnitude -- appear to be increasing in strength. This morning, residents in the Greenbrier, about 50 miles north of ...

Could a Pipeline Explode in Your Community?

The apparent gas line explosion in Allentown, Pa., that killed five people is certain to refocus attention to the 2 million miles of natural gas pipelines that lie under neighborhoods and subdivisions from coast to coast. The Allentown explosion came three weeks after a gas main explosion in Philadelphia killed one person and gas pressure buildup caused an explosion and about 15 fires in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, about 30 miles northeast of Cleveland. The National Transportation Safety Board also will convene a public hearing March 1 into the explosion of a gas transmission line in San Bruno, ...

Several structures have been destroyed, but there appear to have been no injuries. By midafternoon residents were allowed to return to their homes. Mayor Frank J. An anti-corruption unit in Nigeria has charged former Vice President Dick Cheney in an alleged bribery scheme dating back to his days as CEO of Halliburton, the huge oil services company. Halliburton and other firms are accused of paying as much as $180 million in bribes to win a contract to build a $6 billion liquefied natural gas plant in the African country's southern delta, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. Pa. Gov. 'Appalled' at State's Tracking of Peaceful Activists

(Sept. 15) -- Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell says he is "appalled" that gay pride parades, taxpayer rallies and peaceful protests against oil giant BP all became the target of anti-terrorism bulletins distributed by a state agency. "I am deeply embarrassed, and I apologize to any of the groups who had this information disseminated on their right to peacefully protest," the governor told reporters Tuesday evening. The bulletins were issued by the state's Department of Homeland Security, but Rendell said he learned about them from a news story in The Patriot-News of Harrisburg this week. ...

After Gas Blast, Spotlight Shines on Pipelines

(Sept. 10) -- Damaged pieces of 30-inch steel pipe pulled from the ashes may tell the tale of what happened in Crestmoor Canyon on Thursday night, when gas from a ruptured transmission pipeline fed a fire so intense it devoured 15 acres of houses in the San Francisco suburb of San Bruno, Calif., and killed four people. What's certain is that the accident, coming on the heels of the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, will once again cast a spotlight on the effectiveness of state and federal safety regulations governing the energy industry. Regulations passed by Congress in 2002 require safety ...
