TV Networks Rig Reunions for Quake Survivors -- and Ratings?

TV Networks Rig Reunions for Quake Survivors -- and Ratings?

With the scale of Japan's quake and tsunami devastation so large, U.S. television networks are struggling to boil the story down into human terms. TV networks have staged reunions between missing relatives in Japan, providing a rare glimpse of good news amid all the reports of towns destroyed, radiation looming and 10,000 dead. But as is the case whenever reporters become the news story themselves, there's been a backlash. Some viewers are criticizing TV networks for orchestrating reunions, perhaps to boost TV ratings rather than to simply do a good deed. The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo says it ...

American Retiree Trapped in Cairo Apartment Back Safely in US

The retired American nurse who armed herself against protesters in Egypt with a rolling pin and boiling water before fleeing in a scary trip down the dark staircase of her apartment building has returned to the U.S., proclaiming: "God bless America. I'm happy to be home." Mary Thornberry, who moved to Cairo 15 years ago from Texas, was trapped for days in her apartment near Tahrir Square, the site of massive and sometimes violent protests against President Hosni Mubarak. When an angry mob broke down her apartment door Wednesday, Thornberry was ready. "I have a sharp knife. I have hot water. ...

NBC Fires Employee for Posting 'What Is the Internet' Clip

An NBC worker who posted old footage from the "Today" show of the hosts wondering, "What is the Internet anyway?" has been fired, the network confirmed, saying the person had a history of distributing material without permission. The footage, in which Katie Couric, Bryant Gumbel and Elizabeth Vargas try to figure out the Internet and e-mail addresses, made the rounds via said Internet last week, posted and re-posted to Facebook pages and sent via e-mail. Ed Rendell, Former Democratic Governor, Signs On as NBC Analyst

Within days of the departure of controversial talk show host Keith Olbermann, NBC News announced Tuesday that former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a blunt-spoken, partisan Democrat, has signed on with the network as a political analyst. Rendell, who recently completed two terms as governor and also served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, will start immediately at NBC News and its sister cable channel, MSNBC, the network said. "Gov. Rendell has never been afraid to share his thoughtful analysis on national and local issues and he couldn't be a better fit for NBC News," said ...

Olbermann and MSNBC: A Failing Relationship

NEW YORK -- Keith Olbermann's exit from MSNBC appeared abrupt to viewers of his show, but the talk-show host and his network were involved "in a relationship that's been failing for a long time," an NBC Universal executive said Saturday. Olbermann's announcement at the end of Friday's "Countdown" that it would be his last show quiets, at least for the moment, the most dominant liberal voice in a cable-television world where opinionated talk has been the most bankable trend over the past several years. As Olbermann read from a James Thurber short story during a three-minute exit statement ...

Keith Olbermann, MSNBC Abruptly Part Ways

NEW YORK -- Keith Olbermann was MSNBC's most popular personality and single-handedly led its transformation to an outspoken, left-leaning cable news network in prime time. Despite that, he often seemed to be walking on a tightrope with his job. Friday night, it snapped. Olbermann returned from one last commercial break on "Countdown" to tell viewers it was his last broadcast, and read a James Thurber short story in a three-minute exit statement. Simultaneously, MSNBC e-mailed a statement that "MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract." The network thanked him and said, "we wish him ...

So What Does Dick Cheney Really Think of Sarah Palin? [VIDEO]

Dick Cheney isn't shy about expressing his opinions -- unless the question involves Sarah Palin. The former vice president recently sat down with NBC News for his first interview since undergoing heart surgery in July. In a wide-ranging discussion, he offered his take on the harsh criticism he's received, President Barack Obama's re-election chances and the Tucson shootings. Told that his memoir-in-progress is rumored to be "candid and blunt" and that "some scores will be settled," Cheney chuckled. "Well, I have a bit of the sense that I'm going to get the last word," he said. But when ...

Joe Scarborough Suspended by MSNBC

(Nov. 19) -- Here we go again. For the second time this month, MSNBC has suspended one of its program anchors over campaign donations to political candidates. Joe Scarborough, the host of "Morning Joe," received news that the network was giving him a two-day suspension over what it described as eight contributions of $500 to friends and family members who ran for political office, Politico reports. "I recognize that I have a responsibility to honor the guidelines and conditions of my employment, and I regret that I failed to do so in this matter," Scarborough said in a statement. "I ...

Why the GOP Should Insist on New Debate Rules for 2012

Why the GOP Should Insist on New Debate Rules for 2012

It was recently announced that Politico and NBC News would co-host the first 2012 debate at the Ronald Reagan Library. I happen to like NBC News and Politico, but this announcement got me thinking about a topic that has bothered me for a while. The fact is, Republicans should have some say into who hosts their debates. In the past, Republicans had little choice but to allow the mainstream media to set much of the ground rules for debates. After all, they controlled the means of production and dissemination. And while I do not ascribe to the notion that conservatives should avoid the media, ...

6 More Cable News People Who Have Made Political Donations

(Nov. 5) -- Keith Olbermann isn't the only one. After NBC suspended Olbermann for violating the company's ethics policy by donating money to political campaigns, the inevitable question started being asked: Who else in cable news has done the exact same thing? By this evening, the world learned what probably isn't so shocking to begin with: Partisan journalists like to give money to candidates and political organizations they often talk about on television. 1. Larry Kudlow A staunch fiscal conservative, the CNBC anchor gave to former Republican Congressman Christopher Shays in 2009, ...
