The "Today" show has previewed a documentary about a remarkable woman who told the world the harrowing story of a group of Holocaust survivors fleeing Europe. Jewish-American photojournalist Ruth Gruber was 36 and working for the New York Herald Tribune in 1947 when she was sent to document the plight of 4,500 refugees aboard the Exodus, which was bombed by British ships enforcing a blockade. The Jewish passengers on the Exodus -- all of whom had escaped death camps -- would have been sent back to Germany if not for Gruber's photos, which spread around the world. Visit msnbc.com for ...
The Lasso of Truth has been passed down to a new generation. Adrianne Palicki has been tapped as the new Wonder Woman in David E. Kelley's new show about the famous superheroine. His remake will air on NBC. Is she worthy to don the tiara? Lynda Carter, the original Wonder Woman, seems to think so. She tweeted this Wednesday: .bbpBox38059396445634560 {background:url(http://a0.twimg.com/profile_background_images/145845357/LyndaCollageTwitter.jpg) #8B542B;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px ...
Excuse us for a second -- Surge Desk is a little choked up. That's because the series finale of "Friday Night Lights" aired Wednesday night on DirecTV. The show's ratings were never in Top 10 territory, but critics and fans were devoted to the show, which was as much about a community as about football. "Friday Night Lights" came close to cancellation in 2008 but was saved by a unique deal, brokered before the third season, in which DirecTV helped pay for the series and, in exchange, was able to air episodes months before NBC. That deal means, too, that Wednesday night's finale was ...
An NBC worker who posted old footage from the "Today" show of the hosts wondering, "What is the Internet anyway?" has been fired, the network confirmed, saying the person had a history of distributing material without permission. The footage, in which Katie Couric, Bryant Gumbel and Elizabeth Vargas try to figure out the Internet and e-mail addresses, made the rounds via said Internet last week, posted and re-posted to Facebook pages and sent via e-mail. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy Filmed in 1994, the clip features Gumbel demanding, with ...
With their much ballyhooed merger now complete, NBC and Comcast have wasted little time consolidating and organizing their sports resources behind a new management team, the company announced Wednesday. The newly formed NBC Sports Group -- which consists of NBC Sports, Versus, the Golf Channel and 11 Comcast SportsNet channels around the country as well as digital assets -- will be headed by Dick Ebersol, the current chairman of NBC Sports. Ken Schanzer remains as Ebersol's chief deputy in the title of NBC Sports President. Meanwhile, Mark Lazerus, who formerly headed Turner Sports, will ...
As Comcast takes over NBC Universal just before midnight Friday, hockey will be impacted in a potentially positive way. According to an industry source, the NHL All-Star Game -- broadcast on VERSUS on Sunday -- has been selected as the first "cross-channel priority" for the new NBCUniversal. A "cross-channel priority" is an initiative identified by the network's marketing council to receive broad promotion across NBCUniversal's numerous platforms. NBCUniversal has been successfully employing the initiative for big events such as the Olympics, NFL Kickoff, movie premieres like "Despicable Me" ...
When the Federal Communications Commission approved the Comcast/NBC merger earlier this week, it set off all the usual complaints from all the usual suspects. You should be afraid! You should be mad!! Too much content control under one roof!!! Poppycock. So what if one company owns ... 10 TV and movie production studios (including Universal Pictures), 20 cable channels, 11 regional broadcast TV stations, 15 Telemundo stations (arriba!), nine regional sports cable networks, one regional news cable station (New England Cable News), a whole bunch of websites, two pro sports teams in ...
A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll confirms what other pulse trackers are finding of late: President Barack Obama's popularity is on the rise. In the latest poll, 53 percent of Americans say that they approve of the way the president is doing his job, 41 percent said they disapprove and 6 percent said they were not sure. Just one month ago, the same poll found that Obama's approval rating stood at 45 percent, while 48 percent of those surveyed said they disapproved of his job performance. The WSJ/NBC poll is not the only one showing a numbers bump for the president. Polls conducted by ...
