Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! When Tunisia's transport ministry announced earlier this month that it had secured the release of the hijacked ship the Hannibal II and its 31 crew members, authorities released few details other than saying it had paid a $2 million ransom to the Somali pirates. These kinds of payments are now so common that they've given rise to a formal system of insurers, ransom experts and security consultants who specialize in piracy. There may be no official playbook for dealing with piracy, but in interviews with AOL News, those involved in the settlements describe a hidden world of money drops, ...
Iran has vowed not to compromise on its nuclear program ahead of multilateral talks scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Istanbul. Instead, the regime says it wants the talks to focus on global political problems, claiming this could be the "last chance" for some type of agreement to be reached with the West. Earlier this week, Iran's official news agency IRNA quoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying, "Today, we are making progress in the nuclear field and they can say and do whatever they want. They can even issue 100,000 resolutions. Like we care." The United States, Britain, China, ...
South Korea says it's ready to give denuclearization talks with North Korea another try despite last month's artillery attack -- the biggest spike in tension between the two countries since the Korean War -- and a long history of duplicity from Pyongyang. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and the Obama administration initially rejected Chinese and Russian calls for renewed six-party talks with North Korea following the Nov. 23 shelling that killed four South Koreans, saying such talks would reward the North's aggression. In reversing that position today, Lee was blunt about the reason: ...

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced Wednesday that the House will vote Thursday on a bill to permanently extend the Bush tax cuts -- but not for higher-income Americans. The bill would apply only to income up to $250,000, despite the fact that Republicans and some moderate Democrats want the tax cuts to continue for everyone. A vote in the House would not preclude another vote later in the month to extend more tax cuts for higher incomes. Also included in the bill, according to Hoyer, will be extensions of other expiring Bush tax-cut provisions including the marriage penalty tax, ...
"Joined by the generations, those who have gone before, and those who will follow," President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton opened formal peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians today. The imagery has certainly been impressive. Yesterday it was President Obama, flanked by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on one side, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the other striding purposefully, if not altogether confidently, into a working dinner. This morning, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the lead, seated between the pair. An American flag with ...
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Friday the Israelis and Palestinians have formally agreed to begin direct peace negotiations. The talks, hosted by the White House and State Department, are expected to begin before Labor Day. "I have invited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Mahmoud Abbas to meet on September 2nd in Washington, D.C., to relaunch direct negotiations," Clinton said during a special State Department press briefing Friday morning. Noting the goal is to "resolve all final status issues" within one year, Clinton pledged the administration's support for ...
WASHINGTON (Aug. 20) -- Israel and the Palestinians have agreed to resume their long-stalled direct negotiations in Washington early next month, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday, with a goal of two sovereign states existing side by side in peace. The breakthrough marks a small but important step toward easing tensions in the Middle East. Clinton made the announcement at the State Department with special Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell at her side. "As we move forward, it is important that actions by all sides help to advance our effort, not hinder it," Clinton said. ...
