Mitzvah Tanks Take Synagogues to the Streets

Passover ends and they're back on the streets: the mitzvah tanks, synagogues on wheels offering New York City Jews an unexpected, curbside opportunity to pray. "We invite them in the tank, to have something to eat, something to drink, and we have a blessing," tank driver Yishai Eliefja told the New York Times' Cityroom blog. "Instead of going to the synagogue, we bring the synagogue to you." The Chabad Lubavitch branch of Hasidic Judaism, headquartered in Brooklyn, runs the mitzvah tanks. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson started the program in 1974. As American synagogue populations ...

New York Allows Same-Sex Conjugal Visits in State Prisons

New York inmates who are in same-sex marriages or civil unions are being allowed conjugal visits with their spouses or partners. The state officially announced the change in policy last week, making New York one of the few states to grant the private visits for gay and lesbian inmates in legally recognized same-sex partnerships. Although the policy will directly affect a relatively small number of people, advocates for same-sex marriage say it's an important step toward full equality for gay and lesbian couples. "This is a recognition of same-sex couples as families," Molly McKay of Marriage ...

60-Year Data: Tornadoes a Major Threat Beyond 'Tornado Alley'

"Tornado Alley," the Southern Plains, has earned its infamous reputation for being the most tornado-prone region in the world. From a climate perspective, though, the tornado threat is relatively high across much of the United States. The recently updated severe report database of the government's Storm Prediction Center, now including data from 1950 through 2010, indicates that tornado touchdowns are indeed most common in the Plains. However, tornado touchdowns have been widespread across the eastern two-thirds of the nation and have dotted the Rockies and the West Coast. (Tornado ...

Will Donald Trump's Same-Sex Stance Alienate Gay Travelers?

LAS VEGAS -- Donald Trump's bluster may be raising the would-be GOP presidential candidate's poll numbers and ginning up ratings for his reality-TV show, but his remarks about same-sex marriage are already causing problems for his hotels and casinos. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation posted an online list of all Trump hospitality and entertainment properties, urging readers to "consider Trump's decision to stand against LGBT families when you're deciding whether to patronize" any of them. And a spokeswoman for the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, which has ...

Statue of Liberty Stamp Shows Wrong Lady Liberty

You might say this is one monumental case of mail fraud. Due to a United States Postal Service gaffe, a stamp intended to commemorate New York City's Statue of Liberty features a picture of a Las Vegas replica instead. Though the stamp was supposed to show the real Lady Liberty, the "forever" stamp uses a photograph of a half-sized, 14-year-old rip-off at the New York-New York casino in Nevada, The New York Times reports. USPS The U.S. Postal Service has issued a new Statue of Liberty stamp that's accidentally based on the replica at the New York-New York casino in Las ...

ABC Cancels Two Longtime Soaps From Daytime Lineup

NEW YORK -- ABC canceled two of its three soap operas on Thursday, consigning "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" - and Susan Lucci, daytime's most famous actress - to television history. The move leaves "General Hospital" as ABC's only daytime drama, one of only four that will remain on ABC, CBS and NBC's daytime schedule. Soap operas have slowly been fading as a TV force, with many of the women who made up the target audience now in the work force. In place of the two canceled dramas, ABC will air shows about food and lifestyle transformations. Brian Frons, head of ABC's ...
