Obama Says Packages Bound for US Contained Explosive Material

(Oct. 29) -- President Barack Obama said two U.S.-bound packages found on cargo jets abroad contain explosive material, a discovery he said amounted to a "credible terrorist threat." "Although we are still pursuing all facts, we do know the packages originated in Yemen," Obama said during a media briefing at the White House today. "We also know that al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, a terrorist group based in Yemen, continues to plan attacks against our homeland, our citizens and our allies." Obama's statement during the press conference comes just hours after federal agents began an ...

A World Without Facebook, According to Twitter

A World Without Facebook, According to Twitter

(Sept. 23) -- When Facebook, the world's most popular social networking site, went down for several hours Wednesday and today, the Web collectively lost its mind. Fortunately, users on Twitter, the popular microblogging site, knew just what to do in its absence: make snarky comments. Facebook's troubles came at just about the worst possible time, too -- during what should have been an auspicious week for the company and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg. On Wednesday, the news leaked that Zuckerberg would reveal a donation of $100 million to Newark, N.J.'s public school system on "The Oprah ...

$70M Budget Gap Means Newark Mayor Can't Spare a Square

(July 23) -- Facing a daunting $70 million budget gap, Newark, N.J., Mayor Corey Booker says he can't afford to spare even one square: Discontinuing toilet paper in city offices is among his proposed cuts to remedy Newark's 2010 budget deficit. "Every single contract that does not go to the core function of our city in providing safe streets, providing fire protection or other things to keep our city afloat will now be cut," Booker said during a press conference on Wednesday. Newark City Council twice rejected Booker's proposal to create a Municipal Utility Authority that, in addition to ...

In a statement Tuesday, prosecutors said the married father of four was engaging in a public sex act when he resisted arrest and threatened to kill the officer, prompting the officer to shoot him in the chest out of self-defense. How the Pill Liberated My Mother . . . and Me

How the Pill Liberated My Mother . . . and Me

My father once told me that I was a "mistake." Not a mistake in the sense of: "We wish you'd never been born." But a mistake as in: "We didn't plan on having you." There were probably better ways to have conveyed this message to a child. But my father grew up in mid-century Newark, N.J., the son of an Irish barkeep. He hailed from deep in the heart of Philip Roth territory and they didn't mince words back then. ...

JFK Terminal Evacuated After Security Breach

NEW YORK (Jan. 17) - A busy terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport was evacuated after a man opened a restricted door and set off an alarm, authorities said, making it the second known security breach at a New York-area airport this month. The breach delayed dozens of flights and caused headaches for hundreds of travelers who had to exit the terminal and wait for hours as police swept through the building. The passengers at JFK were then shepherded through additional screening. The man, Jules Paul Bouloute, is of Haitian descent but lives in Brooklyn, said Steve Coleman, a ...
