The only sign of progress or productivity, though, was the nine hours or so both sides spent in the federal courthouse on Thursday. Sworn to secrecy about specifics of the court-ordered mediation, neither the league nor the players provided much insight about where they're at in their dispute over the division of this $9 billion business. They'll meet again on Friday. Commissioner Roger Goodell, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, Pittsburgh Steelers ...
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- NFL players and owners haven taken their fight to the courtroom. Representatives from both sides arrived at a federal courthouse in St. Paul on Wednesday morning. A group of players is asking a judge to issue a preliminary injunction on the lockout the owners imposed after talks on a new collective bargaining agreement broke off three weeks ago. Several players are in attendance including named plaintiffs Mike Vrabel, Vincent Jackson, Von Miller and Brian Robison. Veterans Tony Richardson and Charlie Batch and retired Hall of Famer Carl Eller are in court as well. THIS IS ...
WASHINGTON -- Had enough of the he-said, he-said rancor between the NFL and players? Don't expect it to go away anytime soon. The outcome of the league's first work stoppage since 1987 could be decided in court; the first hearing on the players' request for an injunction to block the owners' lockout was scheduled for April 6. In the meantime, there probably will be more of the same as Monday, when Kevin Mawae -- president of the NFL Players Association, the now-dissolved union -- accused the league of spreading "complete falsehoods and complete lies." Alex Brandon, AP Kevin Mawae, ...
WASHINGTON -- Unable to decide how to divvy up $9 billion a year, NFL owners and players put the country's most popular sport in limbo Friday by breaking off labor negotiations hours before their contract expired. The union decertified, and 10 players, including MVP quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, sued the owners in federal court, putting the NFL on a path to its first work stoppage since 1987. Despite two extensions to the collective bargaining agreement during 16 days of talks overseen by a federal mediator - and previous months of stop-and-start negotiating - the sides could ...
We just can't seem to collectively agree about collective bargaining these days. With Wisconsin's state legislative standoff still unresolved, representatives from the National Football League and its players union reconvened this morning to continue negotiating over the very issue that has proved so contentious of late. The current NFL collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at 11:59 tonight, and while there are optimistic indications that the feuding sides will at least temporarily prevent a lockout by extending the deadline, the battleground remains, more or less, the same. The ...
Former NHL star Bob Probert died in June, and researchers have just determined that he suffered from a brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Probert, who was 45 when he died of heart failure, left his brain to science because he believed the head trauma he experienced on the ice had caused permanent damage. Turns out, he was right. Thanks to Probert and other athletes who have allowed scientists to study their brains after death, we're learning more about CTE and how it can be prevented. Here are five facts about this progressive, degenerative brain disease. 1. It ...
Luke McCown is heading heading back to Jacksonville. McCown, the Jaguars' backup quarterback the past two seasons, re-signed with the team on Monday, the team announced. Duration and terms of the deal were not disclosed. McCown had been scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. McCown, an eight-year NFL veteran, had played with Cleveland and Tampa Bay before being acquired by the Jaguars in a trade with the Buccaneers in September 2009. He was a fourth-round draft selection by the Browns in 2004. McCown has started four games for Jacksonville, and has thrown nine touchdowns and 10 ...
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- In a scene that might not play out again anytime soon, Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross and his starting quarterback, Chad Henne, shared a golf cart Monday morning. Ross and Henne were part of a foursome that included Hall-of-Fame quarterback Bob Griese for the third annual Fins Cup Pro-Am. But with the dark cloud of a potential lockout hanging over their heads, both parties tried to project an optimistic outlook to the cameras. "When I bought the team I did it because I was a real fan and loved it and certainly I don't want to miss a season, nor do the fans," said ...
Do the Falcons really have to debate what they need to do with their first-round draft pick? There are plenty of fans who want them to get another playmaker to pair with Roddy White. There are plenty of others -- myself included -- who want Atlanta to draft a player who can harass a quarterback, either a defensive end or marauding outside linebacker. If the Falcons draft a wide receiver it means they do not trust Harry Douglas any more as the slot receiver. Douglas was not very productive in 2010, his first season back from serious knee injury that cost him his 2009 season. Douglas caught ...
