Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!LONDON (Oct. 26) -- A shocking video captures the moment that an undertrained home health care nurse mistakenly turns off her quadriplegic patient's life-support machine. That disastrous action, and a succession of further medical blunders, caused 37-year-old Jamie Merrett to go without air for 21 minutes, leaving the Englishman severely brain damaged. What makes Merrett's story all the more tragic is that until that accident in January 2009, he had succeeded in living a comparatively active life, despite being paralyzed from the neck down since a 2002 car crash. He received around-the-clock ...
LONDON -- At the height of last summer's heated debate over health care reform, the British National Health Service came under fire from those anxious about the prospect of a "public option" in the United States. For many conservatives, the NHS was the very embodiment of the sort of socialized medicine championed by many politicians and interest groups on the left (including, at times, President Obama himself). How ironic, then, that barely a year later, the Brits are engaged in a health care reform battle of their own. At the heart of the debate is a proposal by the U.K.'s Conservative ...
The first ad ever to offer advice on abortion services was screened on British television Monday night. In a country long known for its reserved demeanor, the ad has provoked vociferous praise and condemnation. Much like the Focus on the Family ad featuring Tim Tebow that aired in the United States during the Super Bowl this year, the so-called "abortion ad" is fairly ambiguous. The 30-second spot features a number of women from different walks of life who are "late." A voice-over then says that "Being late for a period could mean pregnancy. If you're pregnant and not sure what to do, Marie ...
A new study in Britain has found that middle-aged women are drinking more than they did in their teens. As alcohol takes a rising toll on both health and health care in the United Kingdom, the British government struggles with what -- if anything -- it should do about this problem. A joint survey by the British Liver Trust and Prima magazine has found that more than 1 in 3 women over 35 drinks more than they did in their teens. And 1 in 5 women over 35 admits to regularly binge drinking. In and of itself, this isn't really news. As I reported back in December on the heels of an earlier ...
Well, just when we all thought the Brits were a bunch of wusses, turns out we were wrong. In the past two days, British citizens, doctors and politicians alike have mounted a vociferous campaign to defend the British National Health Service (NHS) from attacks by American conservatives. As I noted in an earlier post, "NHS-baiting" has figured prominently in the anti-health care reform rhetoric in recent weeks. Certain Republican politicians and bloggers are portraying Britain's government-run health service -- with its alleged delays, death panels, and lack of funding for the elderly -- as the ...
As the health care debate grows ever more heated and vitriolic, there's a new enemy out there: the British National Health Service (NHS).Sure, people have been invoking the specter of socialized medicine for some time now. But in the last few weeks, "NHS-baiting" has become the tactic du jour of conservative politicians and bloggers attacking President Obama's health care initiative. ...
It would appear that we're in for a major legislative battle over the future of American health care. And while it's still not exactly clear what the administration's plan will look like, it does seem that -- Rahm Emanuel notwithstanding -- the president is committed to having a public option as part of the package. ...
