Zambia: Where the T-Shirts for Losing Super Bowl Teams Go

You'd think that there's nothing a poverty-stricken person living in Zambia, Romania or Nicaragua would have that Ben Roethlisberger might covet, right? Guess again: How about a T-shirt declaring the Pittsburgh Steelers the winners of Super Bowl XLV? Before the Feb. 6 Super Bowl, nearly 100,000 shirts declaring the Steelers the winner were printed up and ready to ship to sports stores across America just in case they won the game, and a similar number was printed up for the eventual champions, the Green Bay Packers. World Vision Jeff Fields, senior director of World Vision, holds ...

Canal Plan May Have Prompted Nicaragua's Incursion Into Costa Rica

(Nov. 11) -- Reports of the recent Nicaragua-Costa Rica kerfuffle focused on Google Maps, which was blamed for inaccurately drawing the border line between the two countries. But the story behind the incident is much more serious. Nicaragua's incursion may have been part of a broader plan involving Iran and Venezuela to dig a channel to rival the Panama Canal, according to Haaretz. "Sources in Latin America have told Haaretz that the border incident and the military pressure on Costa Rica, a country without an army, are the first step in a plan formulated by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ...

Google Maps Redraws Nicaragua-Costa Rica Border; 4 Other Google Controversies

(Nov. 8) -- A giant global company like Google is bound to step on some toes now and again, and last week the Web behemoth found itself at the center of an international border dispute. When a former Nicaraguan guerilla, Edén Pastora, took some of his men across the border into neighboring Costa Rica, media reports said that Google Maps was to blame because it had inaccurately drawn the border line between the two Central American countries, causing some of Costa Rica's land to fall inside Nicaragua. On Friday, Google Maps met with the State Department, which confirmed the erroneous border. ...

Tropical Storm Richard May Reach Hurricane Strength

(Oct. 22) -- Tropical Storm Richard is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and pound parts of Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico through early next week. Life-threatening flooding is a risk in this region, which already has been hard hit during the Atlantic hurricane season. National Hurricane Center meteorologists predict that Richard will pass to the north of northeastern Nicaragua and northern Honduras this weekend before making a direct landfall in Belize or the southern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula later Sunday night or early Monday. Richard will produce ...

Matthew Drops to Depression, Soaks Central America

GUATEMALA CITY (Sept. 25) -- Matthew weakened to a tropical depression Saturday along the coast of Belize, dousing the southern part of the Central American nation and neighboring Guatemala with rain that caused flooding in coastal areas. Guatemalan authorities urged people to stay off the roads as floods hit several towns in eastern and northern Guatemala. Civil Defense operations commander Sergio Cabanas said flooding was reported in Izabal and Peten provinces, and there were concerns about people staying in their homes. "The problem is that people have refused to be taken to shelters, ...

(Sept. 23) -- The 13th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Matthew, has formed in the Caribbean Sea, and the storm is likely to become a dangerous hurricane in the coming days. Matthew will first impact Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, but it may later pose a threat to the United States. As of 11 p.m. EDT, Matthew had sustained winds of 45 mph and was located about 330 miles to the east of the Nicaragua/Honduras border. National Hurricane Center forecasters expect the storm to strengthen steadily, becoming a full-fledged hurricane, perhaps as early ...

Nicaragua's Abortion Ban Is Inhumane and Backward

In a move that ought to raise eyebrows even among pro-life groups, the Nicaraguan government is denying cancer treatment to a woman because she is pregnant. This is only the latest outrage in a country that has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world. ...

Why So Few Hurricanes This Year?

By  Steve Pendlebury - AOL News
Why So Few Hurricanes This Year?

(Nov. 5) -- Not that anyone's complaining, but as hurricane seasons go, this one has been pretty wimpy. Ida reached hurricane strength off Nicaragua's east coast Thursday morning, becoming only the third Atlantic hurricane of the year. It's the first named storm since Tropical Storm Henri in early October. The biggest threat from Ida is "horrific rainfall" as the slow-moving storm crosses the mountainous terrain of eastern Nicaragua and Honduras, according to National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen. He predicted the area could get 15 to 20 inches of rain during the day and a half ...
