EU Slams France Over Mass Gypsy Deportations

(Sept. 14) -- France is facing possible legal action from the European Union over its policy of tearing down makeshift Gypsy settlements and hastily deporting their residents to Eastern Europe. Since the beginning of the year, at least 8,000 Roma (as the Gypsy people are known) have been rounded up and sent to Romania and Bulgaria, according to France 24. Human rights groups, the Catholic Church and even members of President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative Cabinet have condemned the policy, which many critics believe is designed to boost Sarkozy's popularity at a time of unpopular spending ...

Carla Bruni Drops Gig For Sarkozy's Sake

NICE, France (Feb. 2) – French first lady Carla Bruni has decided to stand by her man rather than her singing career, at least when it comes to this month's San Remo music festival in Italy. The Italian-born Bruni was scheduled to sing at the festival's competition but she abruptly pulled out, apparently because another singer at the festival plans to perform a song mocking her husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy. TV presenter Massimo Giletti announced Bruni's decision to cancel her appearance Sunday night on the Italian state channel Rai Uno, telling millions of viewers ...

Obama, Brown, Sarkozy Accuse Iran of Building Secret Nuclear Facility

In a hastily arranged appearance before reporters in Pittsburgh on Friday morning, President Obama, along with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, accused Iran of constructing a secret underground nuclear facility and hiding it from international weapons inspectors. American officials have been monitoring the plant for years, but Obama decided to make it public after Iran learned that Western intelligence agencies had breached the facility's secrecy. Trying to play catch-up on Monday, Iran notified the International Atomic Energy Agency in a cryptic ...

Obama, Sarkozy and the Roving Eye

Obama, Sarkozy and the Roving Eye

It used to bug me to no end when men I was with stared at other women. "I would appreciate it if you wouldn't stare at other women when you're with me," I'd say, seething. "It's disrespectful and juvenile." The men invariably got defensive and denied doing anything wrong. "What woman?" they'd ask, and the evening would be ruined. Over the years I've realized that the literal roving eye is more misdemeanor than felony. It doesn't bother me anymore as long as the once-over is quick and doesn't linger or keep repeating itself. As it turns out, the photo showing the president looking at a ...

White House Won't Confirm D-Day Trip

White House Won't Confirm D-Day Trip

Numerous media outlets are reporting that President Barack Obama will travel to Normandy in June for the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings. But all of the available media reports rely on French President Nicholas Sarkozy's Chief of Staff, who made the announcement that Obama had agreed to attend while the president was in Strasbourg, France for the NATO summit. None of the reports contains confirmation from the White House of President Obama's travel plans. Quite the contrary, the White House provided an official "no comment" to at least two media outlets, the New ...

Obama Skips Visit to Normandy, American Cemetery

Reports out of London indicate that President Barack Obama declined an inviation from French President Nicholas Sarkozy to visit Normandy's Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-mer on his way to Strasbourg for the NATO summit last week. The Daily Telegraph reports that White House officials travelled to France last month to discuss the visit with their counterparts on Sarkozy's staff. But one American official familiar with the negotiations said that President Obama never had any intention of making the stop over."It wasn't going to happen. We went through the motions to ...

France Agrees to Take Guantanamo Prisoner

France Agrees to Take Guantanamo Prisoner

French President Nicholas Sarkozy made news last week by offering to help the Obama Administration with its problem of where to house detainees from the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention center once it closes. President Barack Obama has said that he will close the center within the year, but has yet to lay out a specific plan for what is to become of the detainees. But France's offer, while surely welcome, will not do much to lessen the Administration's predicament. France will take just one Guantanamo prisoner."In a symbolic gesture, French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he will accept one ...

Obama Snubs French President; Seeks to Work With Predecessor

Obama Snubs French President; Seeks to Work With Predecessor

French press outlets are reporting on another foreign policy gaffe committed by the Obama Administration. President Obama recently sent a letter to French President Jacques Chirac (French) expressing Obama's desire "work together...to build a safer world." It's a nice sentiment. The only problem is that Chirac has not been president of France for over two years. The current French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, is not a fan of Obama's foreign policy plans, especially in regard to Iran, and now is reported to be upset by the president's outreach to his predecessor. The snub is the third in a string ...
