The 2-minute film is titled "Niqabitch" -- a play on the name of the full Muslim face veil, the niqab. It's gone viral on the Internet, with tens of thousands of viewers on French websites and YouTube. France's Senate voted last month to ban anyone in public from wearing burqas, niqabs and any other veils that cover the full face. The bill, which now awaits President Nicolas Sarkozy's signature, has sparked outrage among ...
NICE, France (Sept 15) -- A top cleric at Egypt's most respected mosque broke with many other global Islamic leaders by saying today that he supports France's decision to ban the full face-covering Islamic veil. Abdel Muti al-Bayyumi, a member of the Al-Azhar mosque council, said there is nothing in Islamic law or the Quran that calls for a full-face veil. The French Senate voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to ban such garments as the burqa, a one-piece garment with a fabric grid before the eyes, and the niqab, a facial veil that leaves only the eyes visible. (Sept. 14) -- Following the lead of the National Assembly, the French Senate today voted overwhelmingly to ban full Islamic veils in public. The final tally was 246 in favor of enacting the new law, and one legislator voting against it. In July, the National Assembly voted 335-1 to pass the law, which bears the formal name "Forbidding the Concealing of the Face in the Public Space." Al-Jazeera reported that the text does not actually contain the words "veil" or "Islam." Today's move, however, is clearly directed at the relatively small number of Muslim women who opt for covering their faces ...
DAMASCUS, Syria (July 19) -- Syria has forbidden the country's students and teachers from wearing the niqab -- the full Islamic veil that reveals only a woman's eyes -- taking aim at a garment many see as political. The ban shows a rare point of agreement between Syria's secular, authoritarian government and the democracies of Europe: Both view the niqab as a potentially destabilizing threat. Bassem Tellawi, AP Women wear the niqab, a face-covering Islamic veil, as they shop Monday in Souk Al-Hamediah, the oldest market in Damascus. "We have given directives to all universities to ban ...
PARIS (July 13) -- France's lower house of parliament overwhelmingly approved a ban on wearing burqa-style Islamic veils Tuesday, part of a concerted effort to define and protect French values that has disconcerted many in the country's large Muslim community. Proponents of the law say face-covering veils don't square with the French ideal of women's equality or its secular tradition. The bill is controversial abroad but popular in France, where its relatively few outspoken critics say conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy has resorted to xenophobia to attract far-right voters. The ban on ...
Early last month, an Egyptian immigrant was banned from her French classes in Quebec. At issue was neither grades nor bad behavior but dress. Naema Ahmed, 29, refused to remove her niqab, the full veil that covers all but the eyes. The school, which helps integrate immigrants into French-speaking Quebec through language immersion, said that having Ahmed's mouth covered impeded her teacher's ability to correct pronunciation. Further, they couldn't guarantee that Ahmed's teacher would be a woman, which she requested. Ahmed was asked to either remove her veil or not return to class. She opted for ...
