KABUL (Jan. 2) -- A chastened President Hamid Karzai must submit new Cabinet picks after defiant lawmakers rejected 17 of his 24 nominees Saturday, including a powerful warlord and the country's only woman minister. The Afghan parliament rejected nominees viewed as Karzai's political cronies, those believed to be under the influence of warlords and others deemed unqualified. "I think, unfortunately, that the criteria were either ethnicity or bribery or money," lawmaker Fawzia Kufi said of Karzai's picks. The vote was a setback to Karzai, though one political analyst in Kabul speculated that ...
And here's why:Where Are My Keys?: When you call out Obama during a rope line, the Media jumps into your history, and finds a tax lien you didn't know you had.If you are nominated for Treasury Secretary, and have four years of taxes you knew you owed, but didn't pay, the Media yawns. Comment at Instapundit A plumber owed $1,000 in taxes that he didn't even know about... ...and it was headline news! American Thinker:In this case, we have a rich, well-educated nominee of Obama's who knowingly failed to pay his taxes, paid some when he was caught out and failed to pay others which he knew were ...
Today's winner of the CTotD is Steve Rosenbaum from the Yahoo Opinion pages. And he almost had me. The reasons are simple. He can't win. Now that Obama is the presumptive Democratic nominee -- the polls all show that McCain's pro-war stance and Bush endorsement make him a lost cause in November. That combined with soft stand on litmus test conservative issues make him an unpopular candidate among the base. I know some Democrats that think the Republicans are planning to let McCain lose and 'sit this one out' so that they can hang the democrats with a bad economy and a war that is a morass. ...
It's the question on every political pundit's mind: Should Barack Obama choose Hillary Clinton as his running mate on the Democratic ticket? Most of the arguments in favor hinge on Sen. Clinton's performance in swing states in this year's primary, her support among women voters, a key demographic for Democrats, and her nearly 18 million total votes received in the primary contests. But the answer to the Clinton question may come from Sen. Obama's general view of the Clintons, rather than from any reading of this year's primary results. Fundamentally, Sen. Obama must first decide which view of ...
Doesn't it seem like this primary campaign began about the same time they replaced the pull-off tabs on Pepsi cans with the safety tabs we have now? Wasn't it around the same time that Shelley Hack made her debut as the fifth Charlie's Angel? Didn't the Fonz actually jump a shark in the middle of it? But now, it is finally over. The general election has begun. Hillary Clinton has conceded, which means no more even remotely fun conference calls. The confetti that I collected from the floor of the Hillary Clinton celebration in Philadelphia has been duly delivered to its rightful owner. We have ...
After this extraordinary week in Democratic politics and Senator Clinton's superb speech yesterday, we move on to the next phase of this contest, the general election. I know I'm damned glad this primary season is over. Here are the websites of the respective Democratic candidates immediately following Clinton's speech: ...
Barack Obama's campaign released this statement, via email:"Obviously, I am thrilled and honored to have Senator Clinton's support. But more than that, I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run.She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans. Our party and our country are stronger because of the work she has done throughout her life, and I'm a better candidate for having had the ...
There are no details but it's still big news: Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama met face to face tonight at a super secret undisclosed location in DC (Dick Cheney's bunker maybe?). No doubt they ordered wings and watched the NBA finals and made fun of John McCain's speech the other night. The tete-a-tete caught reporters off guard. The campaigns aren't saying what was discussed but they did release a joint statement:"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November."So let's speculate. Did he offer ...
Unless you've been under a rock for the last two days, you now know that Hillary is quitting/conceding/congratulating, and because she's a Clinton and Clinton's don't quit, it is highly likely that she was either threatened with something, or she was promised something. Since I doubt that Hillary is scared of much, I'm going to go with an assumption that she was promised something. Other than a keynote at the convention that is, the big speech is a given. VP? That's doubtful. I don't think she wants to play second fiddle if Obama wins, and she certainly doesn't want to be anywhere near the ...
