Lowe's is giving green to the green. The Fortune 50 home improvement chain will award $100,000 grants to four environmentally focused nonprofits and will give an additional $600,000 to the organizations, to be distributed according to voter response. Visitors to Lowes.com/give and Lowe's Facebook page will vote between now and Jan. 21 to decide which organization receives what proportion of the $600,000. Afghan women running in the country's parliamentary elections in September face security threats that make campaigning difficult, and at times impossible. Female candidates have reported receiving verbal threats and "night letters" from the Taliban that threaten violence if they don't stop their efforts, according to nonprofits working in the country.
