The report said 29 of the chemicals injected were known-or-suspected human carcinogens. They either were regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act as risks to human health or listed as hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act. Methanol was the most widely used chemical. The substance is a hazardous air pollutant and is on the candidate list for potential ...
BURLINGTON, N.D. - Some residents in a development along the bloated Des Lacs River brushed off warnings to evacuate ahead of a possible dam break, choosing to stay behind and shore up or pump out their homes. About 30 homes in the small town of Burlington near Minot, in northwest North Dakota, were at risk of severe damage from what officials called a "high potential" the aging dam would wash out. About 200 people had been advised to head to higher ground. "Some of them are and some of them aren't," Fire Chief Karter Lesmann said. "We can't make them leave, we can only suggest ...
FARGO, N.D. - The Red River Valley flood fight shifted Sunday from the cities of Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., to rural areas north of the north-flowing river, which crested Saturday night in Fargo at its fourth highest level in recorded history. Fargo officials said the metropolitan area appears to be in good shape, but urged residents not to travel outside the city. About 60 miles of roads were closed in Cass County, where Fargo is located, and another 10 miles of roads were washed over, officials said. Interstate 29 north of Fargo was closed for about 25 miles. It's official: Fargo, N.D., is "America's toughest weather city," edging out winter-weary Bradford, Pa., in the finals of the Weather Channel's just concluded NCAA-style bracket championship. Fargo used the starting trio of infamous blizzards, extreme cold and spring floods to win the highly competitive 64-team tournament. The city got 29,837 votes to Bradford's 25,575 in the final matchup. Winners were determined by a poll of visitors to the America's Toughest Weather City website, where some 847,000 votes were tabulated over the course of the contest. Scott Olson, Getty ...
Numerous rivers in the Plains, Midwest, Deep South and Northeast are at risk for flooding through the remainder of the week, even in areas suffering from drought and where little rain has fallen recently. The flooding in the Deep South might seem surprising since the region is experiencing a widespread, intense drought. However, recent heavy rainfall over a small portion of the region, combined with water flowing into rivers upstream where rain has been persistent, has resulted in local flooding. This includes parts of the Mississippi River and Alabama River, where flooding advisories and ...
Republican state legislators around the country, holding the majority in most cases, have aggressively moved in the past few weeks to enact new abortion restrictions. If any of these measures pass into law, and many are predicted to do so, they will likely generate a new wave of litigation over the contours of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 abortion decision. It has been five years now since the Supreme Court decided a major abortion case, and none are on its docket for the rest of this term. GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A raccoon has ended a North Dakota team's bid for a fourth consecutive regional championship in high school wrestling. The Carrington High School team was pulled from Saturday's tournament when officials discovered the athletes had been exposed to a live raccoon. Grafton Police Sgt. Anthony Dumas says the team picked up what members thought was a dead raccoon on the way to the tournament in Grafton and stowed in the storage area of their bus. Dumas says when the compartment was opened later, the raccoon "just trotted away." The animal didn't scratch or bite anyone, but ...
From senators to lobbyists in one week flat. Bob Bennett of Utah and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota have been hired as senior policy advisers by Arent Fox, the firm said on its website Tuesday. The announcement comes a week to the day after the pair ended their congressional careers. Bennett, a Republican, and Dorgan, a Democrat, will work together to expand "the firm's already thriving government relations practice," the statement said. The news was first reported by The New York Times. "They bring a remarkable amount of leadership, knowledge and experience in key policy areas including ...
Fenders weren't the only things bending. A strong winter storm packing high winds and snow is being blamed for a massive crash on Interstate 94 between Mapleton and Raymond, N.D. Officials have closed I-94 and I-29 because of poor visibility and road conditions. Video courtesy of Valley News Live shows the extent of the pileup, which involved up to 100 vehicles, including several semitrucks. A blizzard warning remains in effect for parts of North and South Dakota, as well as for western Minnesota, the National Weather Service said. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has ...
WASHINGTON -- The number of Americans reached 308,745,538 people this year, rising 9.7 percent in the first decade of the 21st century for the slowest growth rate since the Great Depression, according to figures released today from the 2010 census. The 23rd decennial population count, required by the Constitution, will be used to divvy up 435 House seats for the 113th Congress, which will convene in 2013. As in recent reapportionments, states in the South and West will gain at the expense of those in the Northeast and Midwest. Since 1940, 79 seats in Congress have shifted from the older ...
