Annual rates of suicide among American troops have been steadily rising since 2002, and are now so high that they rival the actual battlefield death toll. So far this year, 163 active and non-active soldiers have killed themselves. That's startlingly close to the number of troops lost fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom since January: 172.
