Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The former treasurer of the National Republican Congressional Committee has pleaded guilty to embezzling $845,000 in GOP campaign funds over a six-year period. Christopher J. Ward acknowledged in court papers that between 2001 and 2007 he transferred money from campaign accounts he controlled to his own bank account, Congressional Quarterly reported. Most of the 18 committee accounts he stole from were set up to fund the President's Dinner, an annual GOP fundraiser. Prosecutors said Ward also falsified NRCC paperwork filed to the Federal Election Commission, CQ said. The NRCC has agreed to ...
Last August, as you will recall, many Democratic members of Congress were startled to see angry citizens show up at town hall meetings. We haven't seen much of that this year, and probably for good reason. According to the National Republican Congressional Committee, only six "vulnerable" Democrats have even scheduled such meetings in their districts. According to the NRCC, 69 vulnerable Democrats have not scheduled any at all. It's worth noting that Nancy Pelosi will call Congress back to session next week, which might account for some of this. But the recess lasts approximately six weeks ...
Two days after Republicans issued a call for Gen. Stanley McChrystal to put Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi "in her place," Pelosi is telling them she's already there. On Tuesday, referring to her as "General Pelosi," the National Republican Congressional Committee complained that the speaker had been questioning McChrystal's public call for 40,000 additional troops to be sent to Afghanistan. "If Nancy Pelosi's failed economic policies are any indicator of the effect she may have on Afghanistan," said the NRCC, "taxpayers can only hope McChrystal is able to put her in her place." Of ...
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has identified 70 Democrats to target for the 2010 election, according to an email obtained by AOL Politics Daily. Many of the targeted members are Democratic freshmen and sophomores from conservative districts. ...
Patrick Ruffini has some great advice for Tom Davis and the others who are blaming Bush for their problems. President Bush is a lame duck. His term expires in eight months. Politically speaking, John McCain is the leader of the party. Bush's term will overlap that of the 111th Congress by a whopping 17 days. Why should Republican Congressional candidates take the bait by positioning themselves vis a vis someone who will be a political non-factor once they take office? If they embrace President Bush, it's political poison. If they make a fuss of distancing themselves, it guarantees headlines ...
During the days preceding Democratic state legislator Don Cazayoux's unlikely special election victory over Republican Woody Jenkins for the open House seat vacated by Republican Richard Baker (when he retired to be a lobbyist), the NRCC ran ads attempting to sink Cazayoux by linking him to Barack Obama. It didn't work, but the conservative group Freedom's Watch is using the same strategy against Louisiana Democrat Travis Childers who is running against Republican Greg Davis to fill the seat held by the man who replaced Republican Senator Trent Lott, who retired to become a lobbyist (hmm...). ...
I remember quite distinctly a time when the GOP was hopeful that Hillary would win, as they were gleeful about using her for the general election prospects of congressional and senate campaigns. My how times have changed. But those concerns aren't deterring a collection of groups from testing the waters with anti-Obama ads in Mississippi and Louisiana. The NRCC, the conservative advocacy group Freedom's Watch and the campaign of Mississippi candidate Greg Davis combined have put up about $500,000 in advertising explicitly connecting Cazayoux and Childers to Obama. The NRCC is up with a new ...
Winning the Perfect Timing Award of 2008, the National Republican Congressional Committee has its own scandal: The former treasurer for the National Republican Congressional Committee diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars -- and possibly as much as $1 million -- of the organization's funds into his personal accounts, GOP officials said yesterday, describing an alleged scheme that could become one of the largest political frauds in recent history. For at least four years, Christopher J. Ward, who is under investigation by the FBI, allegedly used wire transfers to funnel money out of NRCC ...
The National Republican Congressional Committee is targeting 23 Democratic-held seats - including several freshman - and one open seat in this November's elections, Roll Call reports today (subscription). The paper obtained a memo prepared by the NRCC for a March 5 briefing to political action committee officials.A table that includes receipts and cash-on-hand for the Democrats currently in those seats and the best-funded Republican challengers can be found here. On the list of targets are 10 members of the House Democratic Blue Dog Coalition - a group of moderate-to-conservative Democrats. ...
Attention wealthy people interested in politics: the Republican party wants you.As the New York Times noted today, the party that wants people to pull themselves with their own bootstraps expects the same of people running for Congress. It has little choice since The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has raised $56 million with $29.2 million at its disposal compared with the $40.7 million raised by the National Republican Congressional Committee, which as a cash balance of $2.5 million, the paper said. While having self-funded candidates seems like a dream come true for the GOP, there ...
