Under guidelines obtained by The Associated Press, companies would be urged only to market foods to children ages 2 through 17 if they are low in fats, sugars and sodium and contain specified healthy ingredients. The government is planning to propose the voluntary guidelines Thursday, according to three people familiar with the process who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The guidelines set ...
Forget the latest diet and exercise trends. The secret to burning fat might be as simple as sitting down with a nice cup of tea. Tea contains high levels of compounds that combat the absorption of fat, Japanese scientists have found. These compounds, called theaflavins and thearubigins, stopped weight gain when given to rats on a high-fat diet, the journal Nutrition reported this month. Getty Images A new study shows that tea can help promote weight loss -- but only if you leave out the milk and sugar. There is a catch, though: no milk or sugar in the tea. Proteins in cows' milk ...
LONDON -- Patrick Hetzner tried diets and exercise, just about everything short of stomach stapling to lose weight. Nothing worked. Five months ago he tried something new: a stomach pacemaker that curbed his appetite. Since having it implanted, Hetzner, a 20-year-old Munich mailman, has knocked off more than 22 pounds from his earlier weight of 229 pounds. Hetzner got the device as part of a clinical trial. Since being approved by Britain last month, the device is available for sale across the European Union. It works a bit like a cardiac pacemaker, and consists of a stimulator and a sensor ...
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A proposed kidney transplant that won two Mississippi sisters their freedom from prison can't take place until one quits smoking and they lose a combined 160 pounds. Jamie and Gladys Scott had served nearly 16 years of their life sentences for an armed robbery when they were released from a sprawling prison in central Mississippi on Jan. 7. Gov. Haley Barbour granted Jamie Scott an early release because she suffers from kidney failure, but he agreed to let Gladys Scott go on the condition she follow through on an offer to donate a kidney to her sister. Jamie Scott told The ...
If human capital is the wealth of nations, the House GOP's proposed federal budget will leave us poorer. Economists know that what separates wealthy and poor countries is not simply their natural resources like oil and minerals, but their human capacities, like initiative and ingenuity. Many Americans fear that our status in the world is slipping. Another View on Spending Cuts Who Has the Courage to Lead on Spending Cuts? -- Gretchen Hamel, executive director, Public Notice In that context, the last thing we should do is accept the GOP's proposed federal budget ...
Pepsi may need to can this marketing plan. The beverage company has unveiled its new "skinny" can for Fashion Week, a "taller, sassier" take on the classic soda can that the company calls a "celebration of beautiful, confident women." "Our slim, attractive new can is the perfect complement to today's most stylish looks, and we're excited to throw its coming-out party during the biggest celebration of innovative design in the world," PepsiCo chief marketing officer Jill Beraud said in a statement. But as some consumers embrace the new can, critics including the National Eating Disorders ...
In July, a close friend asked me to join him at a meeting for a new foundation with the mission to combat childhood obesity. As the mother of three young boys, I was acutely aware of the exponential growth in obesity-related illnesses among America's children and had been closely watching the first lady's initiative, Let's Move, which aims to end childhood obesity within a generation. The more I learned about this epidemic the more determined I became to get involved. Since that introductory meeting, I have immersed myself in learning more about childhood obesity -- having extensive ...
With the new year here and Americans everywhere trying to lose weight, the federal government's new dietary guidelines released today call for cutbacks in salt as well as in calories from added sugar and solid fats like butter. The guidelines, which come out every five years, tell people 51 and older, all blacks and people with hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease to cut their salt intake to 1,500 milligrams, or a little more than half a teaspoon a day. The recommendation for sodium applies to about half the U.S. population; everyone else should be limited to less than ...
