Drinking Tea Helps Weight Loss, Study Shows

Forget the latest diet and exercise trends. The secret to burning fat might be as simple as sitting down with a nice cup of tea. Tea contains high levels of compounds that combat the absorption of fat, Japanese scientists have found. These compounds, called theaflavins and thearubigins, stopped weight gain when given to rats on a high-fat diet, the journal Nutrition reported this month. Getty Images A new study shows that tea can help promote weight loss -- but only if you leave out the milk and sugar. There is a catch, though: no milk or sugar in the tea. Feds: Fat Americans Need More Space on Buses

Michelle Obama's war on obesity is getting some support from the Federal Transit Administration: It wants to beef up bus-testing regulations to account for the increased poundage of its passengers. After studying the fats, er, facts, the FTA is proposing to change the average passenger weight from 150 to 175 pounds and the floor space occupied per standing passenger from 1.5 to 1.75 square feet. Karen Bleier, AFP / Getty Images Americans are getting bigger, so the Federal Transit Administration wants to change bus-testing regulations to reflect this. And because passengers are ...

Sharp Partisan Divide Over Government Role in Fighting Obesity, Poll Finds

The campaign against obesity launched just over a year ago by Michelle Obama has attracted its share of criticism and derision from conservatives such as Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Michele Bachmann. Bachmann accused the first lady last month of trying to create a "nanny state" because of her proposal to encourage breastfeeding as a way to reduce the childhood obesity problem. Palin told conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham last November, "What [Mrs. Obama] is telling us is she cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should ...

Heart Attack Grill's Blair River Dead: 5 Facts on the Restaurant Spokesman

Blair River, the 575-pound spokesman for Arizona's Heart Attack Grill restaurant, died on Tuesday. He was 29. At 6 feet 8 inches, River was a giant ambassador for the high-calorie eatery, and he was remembered fondly by the restaurant's founder. "We all have a very, very brief time on this earth, and the measure of a man is how he leaves the world after he's been here, and I can tell you Blair River was my friend," Jon Basso told KSAZ, a Phoenix TV station. The cause of death remains unknown, but those close to River believe it was the result of a bout with the flu that gave way to ...
