Mexico Expected to Sue BP Over Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico

Mexico Expected to Sue BP Over Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico

(Sept. 30) -- There could be one more very high-profile claimant joining in the lawsuit against oil giant BP over the spill in the Gulf of Mexico: Mexico itself, reports Reuters. Three Mexican states, Veracruz, Tamaulipas and Quintana Roo, have already filed claims against BP, citing a similar list of grievances as their American counterparts: damages to fishing and tourism. Now the federal government may be joining that list, at least to reclaim the $35 million that it has spent monitoring the oil, the last remnants of which could hit Mexican shores this month. "We expect the rest of the ...

How Big Was BP Oil Plume? A Geographically Agnostic Guide

(Aug. 19) -- The BP oil spill may be on the verge of being sealed for good, but the controversy over its lingering effects has hardly been more pointed. Besides an unusual and contentious recess hearing on Capitol Hill -- in which Rep. Ed Markey verbally thrashed the Obama Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for what now looks to be its overly-optimistic estimate of the amount of oil remaining in the Gulf -- a new report published in the journal Science documents how an enormous underwater oil plume that the disaster produced could linger for years to come. ...

Crews Fight to Contain New Leak Near Gulf of Mexico

(July 27) -- Not again! A new oil leak has hit the Gulf Coast Tuesday after a small boat collided with a wellhead in Bayou St. Dennis, just north of the ecologically diverse Barataria Bay in Louisiana. There were no reported injuries, but morale in nearby Jefferson Parish, where oil from BP's well has already caused extensive environmental and commercial damage, is unsurprisingly not good. "We cannot catch a break," Jefferson Parish Emergency Management Director Deano Bonano said in a message to fellow officials, reports WDSU. "We have no estimate at this time of the volume of oil [from the ...

New Oil Spill Total Is Bad News for BP, Wildlife

New Oil Spill Total Is Bad News for BP, Wildlife

GRAND ISLE, La. (June 11) - The astonishing news that the oil leak at the bottom of the sea may be twice as big as previously thought could have major repercussions for both the environment and BP's financial health, killing more marine life and dramatically increasing the amount the company must pay in fines and damages. Scientists now say the blown-out well could have been spewing as much as 2 million gallons of crude a day before a cut-and-cap maneuver started capturing some of the flow, meaning more than 100 million gallons may have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico since the start of the ...

A Second Gulf Oil Spill? Let's Roll the Tape...[VIDEO]

A Second Gulf Oil Spill? Let's Roll the Tape...[VIDEO]

As if the Gulf region didn't have enough trouble to contend with in the form of the now-50-day-old BP oil spill, recurring reports of a second, smaller and until now largely unreported offshore oil leak at a rig owned by Diamond Offshore Drilling have surfaced this week, buoyed by a new video taken by a renowned American photographer. Update: On Tuesday evening, Diamond Offshore issued a press release denying it had anything to do with a second spill. Initial speculation of the second spill actually came on April 30 via a federal trajectory map of the BP oil spill created by the National ...

MoveOn Tries to Spur Oil Spill Vigils Across U.S.

Fed up with the BP Gulf oil spill but don't know what to do about it? A leading activist group on the left has a suggestion: Attend one of numerous candlelight vigils being held around the country tonight marking the 50th day of the leak. MoveOn.org has sent an e-mail to its members and issued a press release announcing "emergency oil spill vigils to demand an end to our dependence on oil, call for stepped up efforts to end the spill, and stand in solidarity with those affected in the Gulf." The website itself offers a zip code search to allow interested persons to find the nearest vigil to ...

BP Gulf Oil Spill Update: Where Is the Oil BP Isn't Capturing Going?

BP Gulf Oil Spill Update: Where Is the Oil BP Isn't Capturing Going?

One of the most critical, still unanswered questions of the BP Gulf oil spill debacle is "where is all the oil going?" Using its lower marine riser package cap system, BP now reports that it is collecting "about 460,000 gallons of a day out of the approximately 600,000 to 1.2 million gallons believed to be spewing from the well a mile underwater." But what about the rest of it? Certainly, a large portion resides on the surface of the water in an enormous, 100-mile-wide slick that could rapidly spread up the Atlantic coast this summer. Gobs of crude have already ensnared many animals in the ...

BP, Coast Guard and White House All Withheld Damning Early Oil Spill Info

BP, Coast Guard and White House All Withheld Damning Early Oil Spill Info

BP's communication with the public over the course of the oil spill disaster hasn't exactly been the most forthcoming, but newly surfaced documents and video footage from the onset of the crisis indicate it's not alone in that: The company, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Obama Administration all deliberately obscured the true seriousness of the situation from the country. In damning video footage suppressed for 20 days but obtained this week by ABC News, three separate leaks can be clearly seen pouring oil in the first few days after the explosion of Deepwater Horizon on April ...

Oil Spill May Spread Up Atlantic Coast This Summer, Says New Computer Model

BP oil may soon be coming to a beach near you. A computer modeling study released today by the National Center for Atmospheric Research shows crude from the Gulf oil spill could reach the open Atlantic Ocean -- and then thousands of miles of Atlantic coastline -- later this summer. "I've had a lot of people ask me, 'Will the oil reach Florida?'" NCAR scientist Synte Peacock said. "Actually, our best knowledge says the scope of this environmental disaster is likely to reach far beyond Florida, with impacts that have yet to be understood." The computer simulations show that once the oil ...

As Oil Spilled into the Gulf, Interior Official Boated

A top official at the Interior Department is taking heat for going on a trip to the Grand Canyon that included whitewater rafting three days after the BP oil spill was discovered in the Gulf of Mexico. Chief of Staff Tom Strickland was in Arizona with his wife, Beth, for three days on a trip that administration officials said was "work focused" but which also included a day of river rafting, ABC News reported. Beth Strickland paid her own way, according to officials. Once the magnitude of the oil spill became clear, Strickland (pictured) was taken out of the Grand Canyon by a National Park ...
