AGs Say BP's Proposed Fund Changes Hurt Victims

WASHINGTON (Nov. 19) -- Kenneth Feinberg, czar of BP's $20 billion compensation fund, has proposed changes to the next round of claims that would favor BP and make the process more difficult for the shrimpers, fishermen and other victims of the oil spill, the attorneys general of two states have charged. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, in a Nov. 9 letter obtained exclusively by AOL News, said that changes to rules for interim and final payments appear "not to assist people in the Gulf, but to assist BP ..." Hood listed eight "concerns" he had after reviewing the proposed changes, ...

Commission Report Slams Government's Oil Spill Response

A presidential commission's reports on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill criticize the Obama administration for "underestimating" the amount of crude flowing into the Gulf, which in turn "undermined public confidence in the federal government's response." The National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling, formed just weeks after the April oil rig explosion, released a series of four papers Monday, each deeply critical of the federal government's handling of the disaster. "By initially underestimating the amount of oil flow and then, at the end of the summer, ...

How Much Oil Really Remains in the Gulf?

How Much Oil Really Remains in the Gulf?

(Aug. 19) -- How much oil is still left in the gulf after the worst accidental oil spill in world history was finally stopped last month by the "static kill" procedure? That depends on who you ask. After the leak was stopped on July 15, the Associated Press reported that 184 million gallons had spilled. PBS presently lists 190 million gallons. At a contentious recess hearing today on Capitol Hill, an outraged Rep. Ed Markey (D- Mass.) lashed out at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's earlier, rosier estimate that 70 percent of the oil had been removed by humans and ...

Gulf Pol Rages Away as BP Swaps in Junior Spill Boss

(Aug. 7) -- "I'm trying to be nice and stay off TV. That's what they want," said the man who spent weeks tethered to Anderson Cooper, ranting on CNN with equal rancor about government indifference and BP arrogance. Yet for Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser, lowering his profile has proved impossible. A few days ago, there he was on ABC, accusing BP of a "lying," "covering up" and "underplaying" the extent of the damage it has done. "It's Plaquemines Parish against the world," he told AOL News. Since BP's Deepwater Horizon rig blew up April 20, Nungesser, 51, with his ample girth ...

BP Experts: Everything You Know About Oil Spill Is Wrong

(Aug. 1) -- With engineers ever closer to finally stopping the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, some experts who have been hired by BP as response consultants shared with AOL News their view from the inside and discussed what they see as several misconceptions about the oil spill and the cleanup technology. Alan A. Allen is a field supervisor with over 40 years experience in controlled burning, skimming and other types of mechanical cleanup. He has worked on numerous other oil spills, including the Ixtoc blowout off Mexico and the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. Alun Lewis is a ...

Report Makes It Official: Beach Most Screwed by Oil Spill Belongs to Alabama

(July 28) -- There's plenty of bad news to go around in this year's annual beach report from the Natural Resources Defense Council. The document, released today, has a special section on stretches of coast affected by the BP oil spill, and one in particular captures the sad story of the disaster's impact on the gulf. According to the NRDC, Gulf Shores Public Beach in Alabama is one of the top beaches in the country, receiving the NRDC's highest five-star rating for its conditions throughout 2009. It's also been closed 53 days this year because of the oil spill. At the beginning of the ...

Crews Fight to Contain New Leak Near Gulf of Mexico

(July 27) -- Not again! A new oil leak has hit the Gulf Coast Tuesday after a small boat collided with a wellhead in Bayou St. Dennis, just north of the ecologically diverse Barataria Bay in Louisiana. There were no reported injuries, but morale in nearby Jefferson Parish, where oil from BP's well has already caused extensive environmental and commercial damage, is unsurprisingly not good. "We cannot catch a break," Jefferson Parish Emergency Management Director Deano Bonano said in a message to fellow officials, reports WDSU. "We have no estimate at this time of the volume of oil [from the ...

BP Photoshop Saga: More Doctored Images Surface

(July 22) -- They've done it again! No more than 48 hours after BP confessed to using Photoshop in doctoring a photo of its oil spill crisis command center in Houston to make it appear "more panoramic," two new photographs of the oil spill response effort have been exposed as partial fakes as well. "We've instructed our postproduction team to refrain from doing cutting and pasting in the future," a company spokesman told London's Daily Telegraph today. The second obvious Photoshop job was identified Tuesday by the blog Gizmodo, which received a tip that a BP image of a helicopter ...
