Gulf Coast Claims Facility Opens for Business

(Aug. 23) -- The Gulf Coast Claims Facility is open for business as of this morning. Independent administrator Ken Feinberg is manning the cash register, ready to hand out money from BP's $20 billion oil spill compensation fund to individuals and businesses that were hurt by the spill. Those who want to file a claim can do so online, by mail or at one of 35 claims centers in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The Gulf Coast Claims Facility will be holding three town hall meetings in Mississippi this morning. BP has already paid out $368 million in claims. That money is ...

Why Are Realtors Getting Their Own $60 Million Oil Spill Compensation Side Fund?

(Aug. 20) -- In its comprehensive story on the new Gulf Coast Claims Facility, which on Monday will begin processing claims for the BP oil compensation fund under Ken Feinberg, the New York Times included a short paragraph about a $60 million slice of the $20 billion fund being set aside for the compensation of gulf state real estate agents and brokers. The money would be distributed by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) or the related gulf state associations, with the national group writing the eligibility requirements, the Times wrote. The tidbit made Surge Desk scratch its head. ...

New Gulf Coast Claims Facility to Open: 8 Biggest Questions Answered

(Aug. 20) -- On Aug. 23, Ken Feinberg, the administrator of the $20 billion Gulf Coast compensation fund, will take control of the claims process for those affected by the BP oil spill. Until now, BP has been handling the hundreds of thousands of claims that have already been entered, with many complaining that their claims have been held up for months or only partially paid. The new Gulf Coast Claims Facility is unlikely to resolve all the problems -- and indeed may create new controversies -- but Feinberg has pledged to speed up the process. Surge Desk has the essential details on the ...

BP Sends Claimants Letters With No Checks Inside

(Aug. 18) -- "By cashing this check," the letter said, "you acknowledge that BP has paid this amount as compensation for your claimed losses." Which Wayne Riser would have done -- his fiberglass boat repair and painting business in Orange County, Ala., hasn't seen many customers since the BP oil spill shut down much of maritime life on the Gulf of Mexico coast, he told the Mobile Press-Register, and he needs the money. Except there was no check in the envelope. And now Riser is among the unconfirmed number of oil spill victims to also receive check-less letters from BP due to a processing ...

Strippers Reportedly File Oil Spill Compensation Claim; Pay Czar 'Dubious' [VIDEO]

Countless people's livelihoods have suffered as a result of the gulf oil spill: fishermen, drilling crews, oceanfront restaurateurs. And now ... strippers? That's the word out of New Orleans, where over the weekend England's The Observer reported that the Mimosa Dancing Girls adult entertainment club filed a compensation claim for lost business under the $20 billion gulf oil spill escrow fund that the Obama administration conceived and BP agreed to last week. But today, the government-appointed administrator of the fund, pay czar Kenneth Feinberg, expressed his doubt that the claim was ...

BP's 'Ass Kicking' by Obama Angers Brits, Sparks Pension Concerns

On the eve of one of the most highly anticipated matches in the World Cup, the tension between the United States and the United Kingdom isn't just over soccer. The gulf oil crisis -- and BP's role in it -- has thrown up a new source of conflict between the two countries. In his newfound role as "ass kicker in chief," President Barack Obama has set his sights on the multinational oil giant, BP. Earlier this week, the president suggested that BP's chief executive, Tony Hayward, deserved to be fired for his management of the spill that began on April 20 and has continued to spew oil at levels ...
