Science May Be Murky in the Gulf for Years

Science May Be Murky in the Gulf for Years

Oil is still in a few places in the Gulf, but for the most part it looks pristine. Anecdotal evidence indicates a rapidly recovering area -- escaped crude oil itself is scarce, and regular tests by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have yet to reveal any tainted seafood. But the Gulf of Mexico and its coastal wetlands are vastly complicated ecosystems. Scientists had incomplete information on them before the BP oil spill a year ago today, and it will be years before they can start to draw conclusions about the impact of the millions of barrels of oil that spewed into the ...

Oil From BP Spill Found on Dead Dolphins in Gulf of Mexico

Oil From BP Spill Found on Dead Dolphins in Gulf of Mexico

Researchers have traced oil found on dead dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico to the BP Deepwater Horizon spill but say it's not yet clear whether the oil caused their deaths. Hundreds of bottlenose dolphins have washed up dead in the Gulf in the past year, an unexplained rise in deaths that has scientists concerned. Oil on six of the dolphins has been directly linked to BP's blown-out well, but researchers say it's too soon to conclude whether or not the oil was responsible or if their demise was caused by something entirely unrelated, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. ...

Golden Seas, Ship Filled With Canola Oil, Adrift Near Alaska

Golden Seas, Ship Filled With Canola Oil, Adrift Near Alaska

(Dec. 3) -- This could be a slightly different kind of oil spill. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that the Golden Seas, a cargo ship carrying canola oil, is adrift in Alaska's Bering Sea and could run aground, the Anchorage Daily News said. Unfortunately, edible canola oil is not the only thing being transported in the 738-foot ship's hull. The vessel is also said to be carrying diesel fuel (a rather unappetizing thought). En route to try to rescue the foundering ship are two Coast Guard helicopters, a C130 plane and the Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley. Twenty members of the crew are still ...

Obama Bans New East Coast Offshore Drilling: 3 Possible Reasons

Obama Bans New East Coast Offshore Drilling: 3 Possible Reasons

(Dec. 1) -- Don't drill, baby, don't drill. Reversing its pre-BP oil spill disaster position, the Obama administration announced today that it will not engage in offshore drilling on the East Coast of the U.S. and the eastern Gulf of Mexico region, according to The Associated Press. The original policy, announced three weeks before the gulf oil spill, would have permitted authorized drilling from the Delaware coast to waters near central Florida, as well as in northern Alaska. The new policy, however, does maintain the possibility for drilling near Alaska. "Our revised strategy lays out a ...

Spill Victims Can't Sue BP if They Want Lump Sum

By  Laura Parker - AOL News
Spill Victims Can't Sue BP if They Want Lump Sum

WASHINGTON (Nov. 24) -- Fishermen, shrimpers and property owners who suffered financial losses during BP's oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico must give up their right to sue BP if they accept a final lump-sum payment from BP's $20 billion compensation fund. That requirement is part of the new rules issued today that guides the payments as the process for compensating oil spill victims moves into a new phase. The 90-day period in which the fund made emergency payments ended Tuesday. Spill victims filing for emergency payments retained their legal right to sue BP. The new rules are in a ...

Marie Antoinette to Lord Young: Aristocratic Gaffes Through the Ages

Marie Antoinette to Lord Young: Aristocratic Gaffes Through the Ages

(Nov. 19) -- It comes as little shock that Britain's Lord Young of Graffham lacks the common touch. For starters, there's the title, of course. And there's also his multimillions in the bank, which he made in the 1960s and 1970s as an entrepreneurial businessman. But a government servant, even one in the House of Lords, should at least be able to fake it or keep his mouth shut. Instead, Lord Young advised Britain's poor to stop their whining and look at the bright side of the global recession: For the vast majority of people in the country today, they have never had it so good ever since ...

BP Back to Profitability, But Spill Cost Upped to $40 Billion

BP Back to Profitability, But Spill Cost Upped to $40 Billion

(Nov. 2) -- It may not be any consolation, but those in the Gulf of Mexico tourism and seafood industries still hurting economically from the oil spill do have some company. Though that company recently returned to profitability, it hasn't been cheap for BP either. In fact, it just got more expensive. In September, while the well was still leaking, BP had estimated the cleanup cost at about $32 billion. But now it has upped that to just under $40 billion. According to Reuters, the company said that delays in capping the well exacerbated the cleanup costs, the compensation costs and the cost ...
