By Mara Gay - AOL NewsResearchers have traced oil found on dead dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico to the BP Deepwater Horizon spill but say it's not yet clear whether the oil caused their deaths. Hundreds of bottlenose dolphins have washed up dead in the Gulf in the past year, an unexplained rise in deaths that has scientists concerned. Oil on six of the dolphins has been directly linked to BP's blown-out well, but researchers say it's too soon to conclude whether or not the oil was responsible or if their demise was caused by something entirely unrelated, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. ...

Golden Seas, Ship Filled With Canola Oil, Adrift Near Alaska
By David Knowles - AOL News(Dec. 3) -- This could be a slightly different kind of oil spill. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that the Golden Seas, a cargo ship carrying canola oil, is adrift in Alaska's Bering Sea and could run aground, the Anchorage Daily News said. Unfortunately, edible canola oil is not the only thing being transported in the 738-foot ship's hull. The vessel is also said to be carrying diesel fuel (a rather unappetizing thought). Reversing its pre-BP oil spill disaster position, the Obama administration announced today that it will not engage in offshore drilling on the East Coast of the U.S. and the eastern Gulf of Mexico region, according to The Associated Press. The original policy, announced three weeks before the gulf oil spill, would have permitted authorized drilling from the Delaware coast to waters near central Florida, as well as in northern Alaska. WASHINGTON (Nov. 24) -- Fishermen, shrimpers and property owners who suffered financial losses during BP's oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico must give up their right to sue BP if they accept a final lump-sum payment from BP's $20 billion compensation fund. That requirement is part of the new rules issued today that guides the payments as the process for compensating oil spill victims moves into a new phase. Though that company recently returned to profitability, it hasn't been cheap for BP either. In fact, it just got more expensive. In September, while the well was still leaking, BP had estimated the cleanup cost at about $32 billion. But now it has upped that to just under $40 billion.
