Holy Moses! Science May Explain Parting of Waters

(Sept. 22) -- The parting of the Red Sea (or Reed Sea, depending on how the ancient Hebrew is translated) is one of the Old Testament's most spectacular episodes. After being led out of Egyptian slavery by Moses, the Israelites find themselves trapped: before them lies a seemingly impassable body of water, while behind them the pharaoh's army is fast approaching. Moses appeals to Jehovah for help, and God obligingly blasts a "strong east wind all night" into the sea, creating a path to freedom for the Israelites and, when the wind subsides, a watery grave for the Egyptians. Opinion: Shedding Biblical Light on an Old Debate

(Aug. 27) -- For more than a 100 years, liberals and conservatives have been arguing over the true meaning of justice. The left emphasizes just outcomes -- seeking smaller gaps between rich and poor, and a comparably dignified standard of living for all members of society. The right stresses just procedures -- making sure that individuals keep the fruits of their own labors and remain secure in their property, without seizure by their neighbors or by government. Liberals accept unequal, potentially unfair treatment by government in order to achieve fair results; conservatives accept unequal, ...

The Twitter Bible Keeps It Short and Sacred

LONDON (Aug. 13) -- Chris Juby has set himself a task of truly biblical proportions: to summarize the 800,000-plus words in the Old and New Testaments in a series of snappy daily tweets. Juby, a freelance Web designer and director of worship at King's Church in the northern English city of Durham, plans to condense one Bible chapter a day down to 140 characters or less -- the maximum allowed for a single Twitter post. As the good book contains a hefty 1,189 chapters, he doesn't expect to reach the final installment of Revelation until Nov. 8, 2013. (Juby admits, though, that he might miss ...

Text Suggests Bible Written Centuries Earlier

(Jan. 15) - Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing - an inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of King David's reign. The breakthrough could mean that portions of the Bible were written centuries earlier than previously thought. (The Bible's Old Testament is thought to have been first written down in an ancient form of Hebrew.) Until now, many scholars have held that the Hebrew Bible originated in the 6th century B.C., because Hebrew writing was thought to stretch back no further. But the newly deciphered Hebrew text is about four centuries ...

Why a Real 'Year of the Bible' Would Horrify Its Sponsors

Why a Real 'Year of the Bible' Would Horrify Its Sponsors

So a little-known congressman, Paul Broun, is making a big ruckus by introducing a resolution calling on President Obama to designate a "National Year of the Bible" for America. Broun is a Republican (natch) from Georgia (of course) so none of this should be a surprise, right? Just another Christian fundamentalist, cynics might say, trying to turn us into a nation of Bible thumpers. The reaction has been equally predictable: Those irreligious Democrats have shunned Broun's proposal like swine flu. Jewish pols, in particular, see a distinctly Christian slant to the resolution, and secularists ...
