The federal health agency approved the injectable drug, called Yervoy, for late-stage or metastatic melanoma. The agency has only approved two other drugs for advanced melanoma, the last of which was cleared more than 13 years ago. Neither drug has been shown to significantly extend patient lives. CHICAGO -- Many breast cancer patients can skip aggressive lymph node surgery without increasing their chances of a recurrence or death if their disease shows limited spread, according to a study that has prompted changes in practice. Under current guidelines, the often-debilitating surgery is done if the cancer has spread outside the breast to any lymph nodes. In the study, rates of survival and of patients' remaining cancer-free were just as good whether the women with limited spread - in one or two nearby nodes - had lots more underarm nodes removed or skipped that major surgery. At ...
Ronald Flanagan was already exhausted. The Vietnam veteran was fighting cancer and was just about to get a biopsy before a stem cell transplant when his wife burst into the room with some very bad news: The couple had been dropped by their insurance carrier and couldn't pay for the procedure. The reason for the dropped coverage? The Flanagans, from Thornton, Colo., were 2 cents short on their $328.69 premium payment, something Frances Flanagan says was a simple accounting error she made while paying the bill on the computer. "I pressed the '7' instead of the '9,' " she told AOL News today by ...
WASHINGTON -- Federal health officials said Wednesday they are investigating a possible link between breast implants and a very rare form of cancer, raising new questions about the safety of devices which have been scrutinized for decades. The cancer, known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, attacks lymph nodes and skin and has been reported in the scar tissue which grows around an implant. The Food and Drug Administration is asking doctors to report all cases of the cancer so the agency can better understand the association. The agency is aware of just 60 cases of the disease worldwide ...
Reports of Michael Douglas' looming death have been greatly exaggerated. Though in recent months, tabloids claimed that the A-list actor's throat cancer was terminal, Douglas told "Today" this morning that he is cancer-free. And he's optimistic about the future: "The odds are, with the tumor gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I've got it beat." What does this mean? Surge Desk rounds up some key information about throat cancer. 1. It usually stays local After Douglas was diagnosed, a doctor told Fox News that throat cancer usually does not spread through the ...
There's an old saying: "Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door." It should apply to hospital gowns. Although many doctors and nurses now have the option of wearing scrubs in all sorts of fun patterns and colors, hospital gowns haven't benefited from any sort of fashion update. Nope, they are still paper-thin, still short-sleeved with a tie in the back that does little to cover the backside. Although many patients grumble at wearing these flimsy excuses for clothing, one New Jersey woman got so angry that she decided to make a hospital gown she could wear ...
No more sleep for the Beastie Boys. Vocalist and drummer Mike D says that the veteran rap trio is on pace for a 2011 comeback following fellow band member Adam Yauch's improving prognosis in his battle with cancer. Mike D told BBC Radio that the group, which last performed together in 2009, will follow its original plan to release the second side of its new double album, "Hot Sauce Committee," in the spring. Part one was delayed and remains unfinished due to Yauch taking 2010 off to fight his illness. In July 2009, Yauch underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his salivary gland. ...
BOSTON -- A blood test so sensitive that it can spot a single cancer cell lurking among a billion healthy ones is moving one step closer to being available at your doctor's office. Boston scientists who invented the test and health care giant Johnson & Johnson will announce Monday that they are joining forces to bring it to market. Four big cancer centers also will start studies using the experimental test this year. Stray cancer cells in the blood mean that a tumor has spread or is likely to, many doctors believe. A test that can capture such cells has the potential to transform care for ...
(Dec. 16) -- We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a once-promising treatment for breast cancer has been knocked down several pegs. After reviewing four clinical studies, the Food and Drug Administration wants to yank approval for the controversial and expensive drug Avastin for the treatment of breast cancer. (A European Union panel, meanwhile, says use of Avastin should be limited in treating the disease.) Avastin was given the OK in 2008, under an FDA policy meant to give patients quick access to cutting-edge, potentially life-saving drugs. The catch: Pharma companies have to prove ...
(Dec. 14) -- The tragic death of Elizabeth Edwards has countless Americans asking what more can be done in the search for better treatments for breast cancer. Unfortunately, our nation might be taking a huge step backwards in this fight on Friday. That's the day federal officials decide whether to revoke approval for Avastin for the treatment of late-stage breast cancer. This biologic drug has been clinically demonstrated to give patients more weeks or months in which the spread of their cancer is halted in its tracks. However, an advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration has ...
