The Week in Weird (Penis Museum Edition)

Welcome to our weekly roundup of the strangest, weirdest and most exquisitely bizarre news items of the last seven days. After scouring hundreds of oddities, we found a few that really rise to the top -- or sink to the bottom, as the case may be. With the exception of a story about dogs with fake IDs, all the rest of the stories seem to be sexual things, from kinky taxes to one man who donated his penis to a museum, and another who was less humanitarian with his own (to the dismay of his female patients). So enjoy the stories and we'll have even more for you next week. Behold the power of ...

More than 6,500 people die each year waiting for a donor organ, and New York City is going to test a program aimed at increasing the number of organs available for donation, the mayor's office and the New York Organ Donation Network announced Wednesday. Although many Americans have signed organ donor cards or registered with organ donor databases, until now organs could be recovered only from the bodies of people who died in hospitals, the mayor's office said in a news release. Record-Setting Surgeries Save the Lives of 13 People

WASHINGTON (Dec. 14) -- Twenty-six operations put healthy kidneys into 13 desperately ill people: Doctors in the nation's capital just performed a record-setting kidney swap, part of a pioneering effort to expand transplants to patients who too often never qualify. "A whole new doorway of hope opened," says Tom Otten, a suburban St. Louis police officer who traveled halfway across the country to Georgetown University Hospital to give a stranger a kidney so his wife would get one in return. Relative after relative failed to be the match his wife, Irene, needed. Tests finally showed her body ...

National Donor Sabbath: Organs not Alms

Christianity has the sacred text about not hiding a light under a bushel. But the basic idea is in pretty much every religion: You have a good idea, you have some obligation to let people know about it. Which is why I'm puzzled about one particular good idea I've recently run across. Have you ever heard of the National Donor Sabbath? This year's commemoration of a weekend to encourage organ donation starts today. The official Web site explains: "National Donor Sabbath is part of a donation initiative launched by the United States Department of Health and Human Services in 1997. Observed on ...
