If two Mississippi sisters serving life in prison for an armed robbery that netted $11 want to go free, one will have to donate a kidney to the other. Gov. Haley Barbour has pardoned Gladys and Jamie Scott, black women whose case has been a cause celebre among civil rights activists. But to be released, Gladys, 36, must donate a kidney to her 38-year-old sister, Jamie, who requires dialysis and needs a transplant. (Aug. 6) -- Mark David Chapman, infamous as the murderer of John Lennon, is set for his latest chance at release. He will stand before a three-member panel from the New York State Division of Parole next week. (July 6) -- Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel ruled today that actress Lindsay Lohan must serve jail time for violating her probation stemming from a 2007 drunken driving arrest. Revel sentenced Lohan to 90 days in jail. Lohan sobbed in court as the judge announced her sentence. Thanks to a falling crime rate and the tightening of law enforcement budgets, the number of people in U.S. prisons could decline in 2009 for the first time in almost four decades, the Associated Press reports. The American crime rate has risen steadily every year since 1972, but the 0.8 percent increase in inmate population in 2009 is the smallest annual increase of the decade. During the 1990s, inmate population grew by 6.5 percent each year.
