High School Junior Runs for School Board

Connor Kurtz, self-described fiscal conservative, aims to win himself a seat on the Daniel Boone Area School District school board. He won't be able to vote for himself in the primary next month, however, because he's only 17. The Amity Township, Pa., junior turns 18 in September and can legally run in the November election. He faces three other candidates. If he wins, he'll attend a local college so he can serve his full four-year term. Ratty flags flying at a local middle school prompted Kurtz's initial interest in the school board. He then found himself interested in other school issues ...

Pennsylvania Teen Helps Deliver Surprise Sister

A Pennsylvania teenager helped deliver a surprise Monday morning. With help from 911 dispatcher Shawn Pistorius, the 13-year-old boy helped his mom through the birth of his new sister. His mother didn't even know she was pregnant. "She had told me she didn't know she was pregnant, but she thought she was having a baby," Pistorius, 42, told Pittsburgh's WTAE. He fielded the 7 a.m. call coming in from Butler County, Pa., and called back after the call disconnected. A 13-year-old boy answered the phone. With his mom screaming in the background and his sister's head crowning, the boy remained ...

Cops: Weight-Loss Doctor Told Patients to Burn Calories With Orgasms

A Pennsylvania weight-loss doctor has been accused of sexually assaulting his patients and telling at least one victim that having an orgasm in his office could help her shed pounds. Investigators in Conshohocken say 64-year-old Arie Oren assaulted at least six women, ages 24 to 59, in his Weight Control medical office between 2008 and December 2010. "If you have an orgasm, that would burn around 200 calories," he told one of the women, according to an arrest affidavit acquired by The Philadelphia Inquirer. ...

Professor Brings Strippers into Classroom

Professor Brings Strippers into Classroom

Only a few weeks after an infamous live sex toy demonstration rocked Northwestern University, a professor at La Salle University in Philadelphia was suspended for bringing strippers to perform lap dances during a seminar. Much like the incident at Northwestern, the March 21 performance at La Salle was done in an after-class optional seminar. Unlike the incident at Northwestern, the performance was not for a class related to sexuality -- it was done as part of a statistics course in the business school. Some reports say the women performed lap dances on the professor and willing students. ...

11-Year-Old Steers Car to Safety After Mom Suffers Seizure

Thanks to her quick-thinking daughter and the song "Happy Birthday to You," Dana Encapera and her fellow motorists stayed safe Friday. Dana and 11-year-old Sage Encapera took a mother-daughter shopping trip to Uniontown, Pa., Friday afternoon, about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. As the 36-year-old mother drove home to Perryopolis, she experienced a seizure. "My mom was talking to my dad on the phone and all of a sudden she just dropped the phone and grabbed her chest and started crying," Sage told WTAE-TV. "And I was, like, scared because I thought ... she might have been having a heart ...

Dangerous Thunderstorms Roll Into the East and South Today

Dangerous thunderstorms will spread into large portions of the East and South today and tonight, with the threat of damaging wind, large hail and isolated tornadoes extending from western New England to the Gulf Coast. The new storms are associated with the same storm system that produced tornadoes in the Plains and Midwest over the weekend. The most widespread severe weather will occur from later this afternoon through this evening, when unseasonable warmth in advance of the storm -- part of the fuel for the thunderstorms -- will reach its peak. While the possibility of isolated tornadoes ...

Girl Who Survived Disastrous Sled Ride Called 'Miracle Kid'

Six-year-old Ashlyn Maas has the kind of smile that makes everyone around her grin, too. The first-grader loves to read and usually has a book in her hands. With relief, her father describes her as a "regular" girl. Because all of that almost changed in December 2009, when a playful sled ride down a hill in their backyard in northeastern Pennsylvania ended with Ashlyn slamming into a fallen tree. A seven-inch branch snapped off into the little girl's head, piercing through her right eye and into her skull. Courtesy Jill Maas Ashlyn Maas, who survived a sledding accident in which a ...

Pa. Rower, Cyclist Save Young Men From Drowning in River

Chris DeFelice thinks it's strange that people are calling him a hero, but after he and another good Samaritan jumped into a river to save two young men from drowning, he certainly deserves the moniker. On Thursday, DeFelice was going for his usual morning row in a single scull on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia when he heard wheels screeching on the shore, followed by a small bang. It was the sound of a Toyota Corolla that had been traveling eastbound on Boathouse Row, which runs along the riverbank. The driver had lost control of the car, which crossed a grassy median and plunged into ...

Who Is Curt Weldon and Why Is He Meeting Gadhafi Again Today?

Former U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon has met with Moammar Gadhafi several times before, and he'll meet face-to-face with the Libyan leader again. Weldon, a Republican from Pennsylvania, met today with Gadhafi's chief of staff in Tripoli and is scheduled to talk to the leader himself later today, New York's WPIX-TV reported from Libya. Writing in today's New York Times, Weldon said he's leading a private delegation to Libya and is hoping to persuade Gadhafi to "step aside." "First, we must engage face-to-face with Colonel [Gadhafi] and persuade him to leave, as my delegation hopes to do," Weldon ...

Teen Girls Charged After Fight Video Is Posted on Facebook

Three teenagers in southwestern Pennsylvania have been arrested on charges that they assaulted three other teens, which was discovered after another teen posted a video of the incident on Facebook. "This is the first case like this my department has handled," Chief Randy Cox, of the Somerset Borough Police Department, told AOL News. "It is amazing the things you can find on YouTube and Facebook and the level of stupidity that is involved in what people post." Police received reports of a fight shortly after 6 p.m. March 2 in Somerset, a rural town 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The fight ...
