India, Pakistan PMs Hold Court for Cricket

MOHALI, India -- The prime ministers of India and Pakistan, mixing business with pleasure, joined tens of thousands of cricket fans in a northern Indian stadium Wednesday to watch a key match between their rival nations. Greeting the players on the pitch, India's Manmohan Singh and Pakistan's Yousuf Gilani shook hands first with the visiting Pakistani team. They then switched positions, with Gilani and then Singh shaking hands with the Indian players before the two retreated to their seats in a private box. Their attendance at the at the World Cup semifinal coincides with a resumption in ...

Arrest Warrant Issued for Pakistan's Ex-Ruler Musharraf

ISLAMABAD - A Pakistani court issued an arrest warrant Saturday for former President Pervez Musharraf in connection with the assassination of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto, while government investigators accused the retired general of involvement in the slaying. Though he does not yet face any charges, the developments mark a major escalation of legal troubles for Musharraf, a one-time U.S. ally who went into self-exile in Britain in 2008 after being forced out of the presidency he secured in a 1999 military coup. The accusations of a role in Bhutto's death were leveled by a government now run ...

Opinion: Will Egypt Follow Pakistan's Troubled Path?

In recent years, Washington backed a strong-arm ruler of a Muslim country who faced strong insurgent tensions within his populace. No, we are not talking about Hosni Mubarak but Gen. Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan. The result was a fiasco for American foreign policy, one that offers important lessons for how the U.S. should handle the situation in Egypt and its aftermath. In Pakistan, unwavering support from the U.S. and an open-aid spigot rewarded Musharraf's assistance in apprehending terrorists. But in 2007, when Musharraf ordered Pakistan's Supreme Court chief justice to either resign or ...

Obama Keeping Campaign Promise on Pakistan Raids?

Tuesday's New York Times reports that "senior American military commanders in Afghanistan are pushing for an expanded campaign of Special Operations ground raids across the border into Pakistan's tribal areas, a risky strategy reflecting the growing frustration with Pakistan's efforts to root out militants there." You may or may not agree with this strategy, but as I pointed out Tuesday on "Morning Joe," one thing is certain: This is precisely what President Obama pledged to do when running for president. For example, during a high-profile 2007 policy speech, Obama said: "If we have ...

Musharraf Says Pakistan Needs Him

(Oct. 19) -- Slamming the current leaders of his country, former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf today declared it vital that he return home to rejoin politics if Pakistan is to be saved from terrorism and economic collapse. "None of them [politicians] are capable of delivering Pakistan from the darkness that it faces today," the former military dictator said in a speech at the Asia Society in Houston. Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Rejects Afghanistan Time Limits

Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Rejects Afghanistan Time Limits

Pervez Musharraf, the former president of Pakistan, writes in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal that "the exit strategy from Afghanistan must not and cannot be time related." Musharraf argues that the United States had the support of the Afghan people after "liberating" them from the Taliban in 2001, but that popular opinion turned sour when the victory did not lead to a stable, representative government. Now, the former president says, the United States must create a "political surge" in addition to the troops President Obama has promised. "A military solution alone cannot guarantee success," ...

Castro Resigns, Musharraf's Party Ousted

It was a bad day for petty tyrants. Following half of a decade as a communist dictator and constant thorn in the side of the United States, Cuban leader Fidel Castro has announced he will resign. The announcement was met with subtle indifference among Cubans, and hopeful applause from the U.S. "I believe that the change from Fidel Castro ought to begin a period of a democratic transition," stated President Bush. However, as Castro's brother Raul (who has been ruling in his stead since mid-2006) is presumed to ascend as the next president, significant change is highly unlikely. As Mark Impomeni ...

Pakistan Elections Sweep Out Ruling Party

Parliamentary elections were held in Pakistan today, with President Pervez Musharraf's ruling Muslim League-Q Party suffering badly at the polls. Opposition paties, one led by the son of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, and the other led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, were each able to claim over 100 seats in the 272 seat parliament. Musharraf's party, by contrast, was able to hold on to only 20 to 30 seats. The Pakistan Peoples Party, Bhutto's party, won the most seats and will be tasked with forming a government. It is unclear at this time whether Sharif's Muslim ...

Pakistan Rejects U.S. Intelligence Presence

Pakistani military and intelligence leaders met secretly with the top two U.S. intelligence officials in Islamabad earlier this month. During that meeting, Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell and CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden pressed Pakistan for greater access to the country for U.S. intelligence assets and offered Pakistan help in its battle with Taliban remnants and al-Qaeda in its Northwest Frontier Provinces. The meeting came in the aftermath of the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, when it appeared that the country might be descending ...
