Suicide Bomber Kills 36 at Funeral in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- A suicide bomber struck a funeral attended by anti-Taliban militiamen in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 36 mourners and wounding more than 100 in the deadliest militant attack in the country this year. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility. The blast near the city of Peshawar was not far from the tribally administered regions bordering Afghanistan where militants are at their strongest. The area struck is home to several tribal armies that battle the Taliban with the government's encouragement. Police officer Zahid Khan said about 300 people ...

Missile Strikes Kill 17 Near Afghan Border in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Three suspected U.S. missile strikes targeting a militant-riddled tribal region near the Afghan border killed 17 people today, including at least two who were retrieving bodies from the first attack, Pakistani intelligence officials said. The strikes come in the final days of a year that has seen an unprecedented number of such drone-fired attacks as part of a ramped-up U.S. campaign to take out al-Qaida and Taliban fighters seeking sanctuary outside Afghanistan. About 115 missile strikes have been launched this year, more than doubling last year's total. Nearly all ...

5 NATO Troops Among Dead in Afghanistan Attacks

KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 14) -- A series of bomb blasts and insurgents attacks killed 11 people across Afghanistan on Sunday, including five NATO service members and three Afghan police, officials said. The strikes, which come a day after Taliban fighters stormed a NATO base in eastern Afghanistan, show the insurgents' fighting spirit has not been broken despite a surge of U.S. troops and firepower. Also Sunday, the Afghan president's office said the former ambassador-designate to Pakistan, who was seized by gunmen two years ago in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, has been released and is ...

QUETTA, Pakistan (Sept. 4) -- The death toll from a Pakistani Taliban suicide attack on a Shiite Muslim procession rose from 43 to 65 overnight as critically wounded people died in hospitals, police said Saturday. About 150 people were wounded and some remained in critical condition after the bombing Friday in the southwestern city of Quetta, police official Mohammed Sultan said. The attack was the second in a week against Shiites for which the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility. A triple suicide bombing Wednesday night killed 35 people at a Shiite ceremony in the eastern city of ...

Peshawar's Women Lead the Way to Recovery

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (July 23) -- A late Sunday morning in Peshawar's main shopping district used to be a place reserved only for the brave or the suicidal. A year ago, when this roiling frontier city was gripped by the savagery of near daily bomb blasts, few people dared to risk their lives for the sake of a new outfit or a new toy for their child or a leisurely stroll through the dense maze of the bazaar's frenetic alleyways. Back then, Peshawar was in lockdown, its old city grinding to a surreal standstill amid an atmosphere charged with fear and foreboding. A year later, the bazaar is ...

Twin Attacks on Sufi Shrine in Pakistan Kill Dozens

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (July 2) -- Two suicide bombers detonated more than 65 pounds of explosives in one of Lahore's iconic cultural landmarks, killing at least 37 people and wounding 175. The attack on the Sufi shrine, locally known as Data Darbar, has sent shockwaves through Pakistan's Sufi community, who have lived in fear of such violence for four years. Sufism, the mystical strand of Islam, is a largely nonviolent, apolitical religious creed that places an individual's relationship with God above the demands of any single doctrine. It is credited with producing some of Islam's greatest ...

Pakistan Lashes Out at US After Deadly Shrine Bombings

LAHORE, Pakistan (July 2) -- Pakistanis lashed out Friday at the U.S., blaming its alliance with their government and its presence in Afghanistan for spurring two suicide bombers to kill 42 people at the country's most important Sufi shrine. The reactions showed the challenge facing Washington and the Pakistani government when it comes to rallying public support against the Islamist extremism that has scarred the South Asian nation, even after an audacious attack on the moderate, Sufi-influenced Islam most Pakistanis practice. Thousands of people had gathered late Thursday at the green-domed ...

Bombings in Pakistan's NW Follow Bloodiest Weekend

(April 19) -- Two more bombings today follow the bloodiest weekend this year for Pakistan's newly named province in the northwest. It has been an inauspicious beginning to what provincial politicians were hoping would mark a new start for the troubled region. Formerly called the North West Frontier Province, Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa has been the epicenter of the war against Islamic militancy in Pakistan. The latest blasts, one in Peshawar's Qissa Khawani Bazaar targeting a rally protesting power cuts in the city, killed 15, with the death toll expected to rise. The second, hours earlier, targeted ...

Taliban Attacks U.S. Consulate in Pakistan

Members of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for a bombing of the U.S. consulate in Peshawar on Monday, an attack that killed five and wounded 20, The New York Times reports. At least two Pakistani security guards were among the dead. The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad said that the attack was a vehicle suicide bomb, and that terrorists attempted to enter the building with hand grenades and weapons fire. Shortly before the blast in Peshawar, another bomb went off in the Dir Province, killing 40. The two attacks were the first in several months, indicating that militants have not given ...

In Peshawar, Violence Leaves Psychological Scars

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Jan. 9) – Khairullah is a broken man. "He came to Peshawar to escape the war," says the 57-year-old's eldest son, Rahimullah. "But it's Peshawar that has driven him mad." The single-named father of six from the Mohmand tribal agency in Pakistan's restive northwest lies on a cot in the waiting room of the Shafique Psychiatric Clinic in Peshawar, the capital of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). His body sporadically erupts into paroxysm, and his tortured eyes dart over the blank ceiling as if caught in a violent waking nightmare. He rarely speaks as his wife, ...
