US Tries to Contain Damage From Leaked Cables

WASHINGTON (Nov. 29) -- The release of more than 250,000 classified State Department documents forced the Obama administration into damage control, trying to contain fallout from unflattering assessments of world leaders and revelations about backstage U.S. diplomacy. The publication of the secret cables amplified widespread global alarm about Iran's nuclear ambitions and unveiled occasional U.S. pressure tactics aimed at hot spots in Afghanistan, Pakistan and North Korea. The leaks also disclosed bluntly candid impressions from both diplomats and other world leaders about America's allies ...

Snyder will face Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, the Democratic nominee, in the November general election. Bernero trounced his primary opponent Andy Dillon with 61 percent of the vote. Races in Michigan and Kansas Launch a Busy Primary Season

The August primary season begins in earnest Tuesday with the focus on Republican voters in Michigan, who will choose their candidate for governor, and in Kansas, where two long-serving congressmen are competing for the seat of GOP Sen. Sam Brownback, long a leading conservative. Both the crowded Michigan race and the Kansas contest between Reps. Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran, are close, according to the latest polls. It is also primary day in Missouri, but there isn't much question that the namesakes of two of the state's longstanding political families -- Democrat Robin Carnahan and ...

Republicans Lay Down the Gauntlet on Bush Prosecutions

Congressional Republicans, led by House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), came out swinging against President Barack Obama's apparent new-found willingness to entertain the possibility of prosecuting former Bush Administration officials for decisions made regarding enhanced interrogations. Hoekstra (R-MI), penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal declaring that if Democrats wanted to conduct an investigation, Republicans would make sure Congressional Democrats were the subjects of the probe right along with the Bush Administration."[L]ast week Mr. Obama overruled ...

GOP Congressman on Islam and Free Speech

GOP Congressman on Islam and Free Speech

GOP Congressman Peter Hoekstra has an article in the WSJ entitled, "Islam and Free Speech." The impetus for Hoekstra's piece is the upcoming release of Dutch political leader Geert Wilders' critical film on Islam. The film, Fitna, apparently contains several images which Muslims are bound to find offensive. Thus, the Dutch are again at the tip of the spear in a cultural (sometimes literal) battle between radical Islam and Western democracies. A few excerpts of Rep. Hoekstra's piece are below, but the entire piece is worth a read: Reasonable men in free societies regard Geert Wilders's ...

Veto Threat for Waterboarding Ban

Veto Threat for Waterboarding Ban

The House of Representatives passed a bill barring the CIA from using waterboarding in its interrogations of terrorist detainees on a close vote yesterday. The measure passed 222-199, far short of the 2/3 majority needed to override a presidential veto. The White House quickly issued a veto threat on the bill, saying that it would "prevent the United States from conducting lawful interrogations of senior al Qaeda terrorists to obtain intelligence needed to protect Americans from attack."House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) called the bill a step toward exercising ...
