Unions Suffer Historically Low Support From Americans

Unions Suffer Historically Low Support From Americans

Fewer and fewer Americans are looking for the union label. At a time when state worker unions are under assault by Republican legislators in Wisconsin, when states and municipalities are resorting to drastic budget cutting, and amid epidemic levels of unemployment, just 45 percent of respondents expressed a positive view of labor unions in a Pew Research Center poll. That's about the lowest level in a quarter-century. Oddly enough, just over half of Americans believe unions do have a positive effect on workers' salaries and benefits, and that they improve conditions for all American workers ...

Half of Americans Don't Know Squat About the Egyptian Crisis, Poll Finds

News flash: There's something happening in Egypt. Of course, being Surge Desk readers, you already knew that, but according to a new Pew Research Center poll, roughly one in two Americans reports hearing "little or nothing" about Egypt's ongoing anti-government protests. The survey of 1,385 adults also showed that Americans lack "a clear point of view" on the Egyptian demonstrations. Of those who did express an opinion on the crisis, a majority of Democrats (69 percent) and independents (57 percent) responded that the White House is handling the Egypt issue well, while fewer Republicans (43 ...

Poll Shows Strong Public Support for Tax Cut Deal

(Dec. 13) -- Conservatives, liberals and political independents are markedly in sync when it comes to the deal President Barack Obama forged with Republicans on extension of the Bush-era tax cuts and unemployment benefits. A poll released today by the Pew Research Center indicates a strong bipartisan majority backs the deal, including 62 percent of Republicans, 63 percent of Democrats and 60 percent of independents. Within the parties, 64 percent of conservatives and 65 percent of liberals favor the deal. At a time when the two parties' elected officials in Washington have been bitterly ...

Want a Republican? Use a Landline. A Democrat? Call a Cell Phone.

Want a Republican? Use a Landline. A Democrat? Call a Cell Phone.

If you wanted a symbolic picture of the Republican-Democratic divide, maybe it should be a split photograph of soon-to-be-House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama talking by phone. Boehner would be on a landline and Obama would be on his cell phone. Well, maybe that's taking things too far. But the Pew Research Center's final study for this year of the disparities between those interviewed by landline and those interviewed by cell phone further bolster its earlier findings that landline-only samples of voters skew the results toward Republicans. Analyzing three of its own polls ...

Boffo GM IPO Highlights Secret of TARP's Success

ANALYSIS (Nov. 19) -- The success of General Motors' return to the stock market caps the revival of a one-time bastion of American industry all but left for dead by investors just two years ago. But it is also the latest achievement to mark the quiet triumph of the multibillion-dollar government financial programs begun in the Bush administration, and continued by President Barack Obama, that economists credit with staving off a depression even though many Americans hate them. "Today one of the toughest tales of the recession took another big step towards becoming a success story," Obama ...

Poll: 4 in 10 Say Marriage Becoming Obsolete

(Nov. 18) -- Nearly four in 10 Americans think marriage is becoming obsolete, according to a new survey that reveals changing attitudes on gay marriage, unwed couples and the definition of what a family is. The study, conducted by social scientists at the Pew Research Center in coordination with Time magazine, also shows that Americans' attitudes toward family issues differ by race, age and social class. It's based on interviews with 2,691 adults reached on their cell or land-line phones during the first three weeks of October. Pew researchers also analyzed demographic and economic data from ...

Parties Differ on Compromise vs. Sticking to Principles

Parties Differ on Compromise vs. Sticking to Principles

The big question hanging over the next two years is how much room, if any, there will be for compromise and "working together" between Republicans -- with their new majority in the House and increased muscle in the Senate -- and President Obama and his fellow Democrats in Congress. That question comes into sharper focus after the successes of the tea party movement, most of whose candidates place the importance of principle over compromise, and the influence that view will have on Capitol Hill Republicans, not only as they wade through the thorny issues facing Congress but look ahead to ...

The Results Are In: The Media Officially Loves (Covering) Christine O'Donnell

(Nov. 2) -- Has navel-gazing reached an all-time low? Pew's Project for Excellence in Journalism released a study of the most news covered candidates. And the result is that everyone in the media is now covering a study of what they already covered. Pretty meta. Seriously though, Christine O'Donnell has the most media coverage by a long shot. Nobody knew her name two months ago. How did she do that? The Delaware Tea Party Senate candidate -- who has given very limited national media access -- was the lead figure in 160 news stories over the past 11 months, despite only seriously making ...

Independent Voters Fed Up With Entire Political System

Independent Voters Fed Up With Entire Political System

Much has been written about the anger and disillusionment of voters this year. Pollsters are predicting a "throw the bums out" wave that could sweep hundreds of new candidates into office on Tuesday. The Tea Party has manifested much of this anger on the right but what is particularly striking and has been much less reported is the level of anger this year in the independent/swing voters, who represent a much bigger block of votes. An estimated 37 percent of all American voters now call themselves independents or unaffiliated voters, according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center. ...

Opinion: We Didn't Flunk the Religion Test

(Sept. 30) -- The headlines this week made bold pronouncements: "Americans Don't Know Much About Religion." "Atheists Know More About Religion Than Believers." "Basic Religious Test Stumps Most Americans." Really? Did these writers read the survey these articles were based on? The Pew Forum survey on religion in America contained a number of revelations, but few were covered in the initial round of articles. After examining the actual results, here are four important truths about Americans and God: 1. Americans Know More About Religion Than Almost Any Other Topic. To begin, the 3,412 ...
