Record-Breaking Storm System Roars Across US

The powerful storm system that swept through the Plains on Sunday and to the East Coast today, killing at least seven people in the Deep South, spawned over 1,500 reports of severe weather since Sunday, including a record-breaking 1,200-plus reports during one 24-hour period. The hardest hit regions were the Tennessee Valley, Mississippi Valley and the Southeast, where the majority of the reports piled up from early Monday through early Tuesday. During the 24 hours, more preliminary severe weather reports -- large hail, wind damage and tornadoes -- were tallied than in any other 24-hour ...

Joke's on the Northeast With April Fools' Snow

BOSTON -- A no-joke April Fools' snowstorm descended upon parts of the Northeast early Friday, a cruel prank on a region that was finally enjoying a reprieve from its long, white winter. The spring snowstorm was expected to last through Friday morning -- April Fools' Day -- dropping up to 10 inches of snow in some areas in eastern New York and around New England, dispiriting people eager for spring after a long, snow-filled winter. In Portland, Maine, heavy wet snow clung to trees and street signs Friday morning. Robert F. Bukaty, AP A motorist passes a sign urging drivers to ...

"The boyfriend was approached by the family members and friends about the whereabouts of Alivia, and he gave some conflicting stories as to where she was located," Allegheny County Police Lt. Jeff Korczyk said during a Wednesday news ...

Can Anything Be Done to Help Cities Like Detroit?

Can Anything Be Done to Help Cities Like Detroit?

Even for those who watched the long, slow decline of Detroit, the new census count stunned: The one-time powerhouse of the industrial Midwest lost 25 percent of its population in the past 10 years, falling below 715,000 residents. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing moved swiftly to announce the city would challenge the accuracy of the official count and focus like a laser on luring new residents and new business. "We must confront reality ... and commit to doing things differently," Bing said at a news conference. "If we don't change, the population drain will continue." But Bing -- and his successors ...

Zambia: Where the T-Shirts for Losing Super Bowl Teams Go

You'd think that there's nothing a poverty-stricken person living in Zambia, Romania or Nicaragua would have that Ben Roethlisberger might covet, right? Guess again: How about a T-shirt declaring the Pittsburgh Steelers the winners of Super Bowl XLV? Before the Feb. 6 Super Bowl, nearly 100,000 shirts declaring the Steelers the winner were printed up and ready to ship to sports stores across America just in case they won the game, and a similar number was printed up for the eventual champions, the Green Bay Packers. World Vision Jeff Fields, senior director of World Vision, holds ...

Mom of First 'Have You Seen Me?' Missing Girl Hopeful About New Tip‎

More than 2 1/2 decades have passed since Janice McKinney last saw her missing daughter, Cherrie Mahan. The 8-year-old was one of the first to be featured on the "Have You Seen Me?" direct-mail advertisements. Despite the passage of time, McKinney is not ready to give up, especially with word that police have received a new tip in the case. "I'm hopeful," the western Pennsylvania woman told AOL News. "And the police are awfully optimistic about this lead. When I think with my heart, I think this could be it, but when I think with my head, I feel I need to be cautious." Keith ...

Do You Tweet Southern? Twitter Keeping Regional Dialects Alive, Study Finds

You can take the Twitter out of New York, but can you take New Yawk out of the Twitter? A study at Carnegie Mellon University has found that Twitter has its own geographic dialects. The authors examined 380,000 tweets during a one-week period in March and discerned distinctive linguistic characteristics based on the geographical region where the messages originated. Some of the trends noted by the CMU study aren't terribly surprising: "Y'all" tends to pop up mostly in tweets from the South, while "yinz" is used primarily in CMU's home of Pittsburgh. However, other examples of local dialect ...

Blast From the Past: Old Steel Mill Forges New Life as a Park

(Dec. 2) -- Preservationists outside Pittsburgh are fighting to put an abandoned steel mill back to work -- not so it can produce metal, but so it can protect history. Since the blast furnaces fired up for the last time at the Carrie Furnace in 1978, the decaying steel mill on the bank of the Monongahela River has served as a solemn reminder of the industry that turned Pittsburgh into a thriving city -- then left it polluted and jobless. Now, more than three decades after the Carrie Furnace went from being a bustling workplace for 4,000 employees to a 168-acre ghost town, a team of ...
