Three Online Poker Houses Face Fraud Charges in NYC

NEW YORK -- The multibillion-dollar business of the three biggest Internet poker companies became a target of federal authorities before an indictment was unsealed Friday, charging 11 people with bank fraud and illegal gambling. Prosecutors in Manhattan said they've issued restraining orders against more than 75 bank accounts in 14 countries used by the poker companies, interrupting the illegal flow of billions of dollars. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said the defendants "concocted an elaborate criminal fraud scheme, alternately tricking some U.S. banks and effectively bribing others to ...

Mizrachi Plays for Family Pride in Poker Finals

LAS VEGAS (Nov. 6) -- Plenty of poker players say they were born gamblers. In the case of World Series of Poker contender Michael Mizrachi and his three poker-pro brothers, it may even be true. Mizrachi is one of the nine finalists who survived an initial field of 7,319 in July to vie this weekend for the $8.9 million top prize in the 41st WSOP Main Event. He is also part of a unique foursome of siblings from Miami whose parents were themselves intensive gamblers and card players. Their mother in particular offered a startling openness and tolerance for her young sons' fascination with ...

They and six others survived a grueling all-night marathon session that began at noon Saturday with 27 of the 7,319 entrants remaining and ended early Sunday when Wichita car salesman Brandon Stevens, 35, busted out in 10th place. With that, play was halted until Nov. 6, when the so-called November Nine will duke it out for the most ...

Keeping a Poker Face: Vegas Pro Breaks Gambling Record

LAS VEGAS (June 6) -- In the end, it may not have been the yoga or the low-fat diet or the frequent visits from his movie-star girlfriend that helped Phil Laak barrel past every known record for the longest consecutive amount of time playing poker. After more than 100 hours at the table at Bellagio, Laak says his saving grace was, uh, talcum powder. "About every four or five hours, when I take a bathroom break, I do a quick submarine shower, change my T-shirt and powder my butt and the underside of my legs," Laak said to AOL News. "Any place where my body mass is pressing against the chair, ...

Poker Star Makes Bid for Marathon Playing Record

LAS VEGAS (June 3) -- As a kid, Phil Laak tried to break the Guinness World Record for hopping on a pogo stick, but he lasted only 10 minutes. Then he considered memorizing pi, until he found out that the record-holder had gone more than a day reciting the infinite number's digits. So now, at 37, he's settled for a different -- though still extreme -- stab at immortality: Laak hopes by Saturday night to set the mark for playing the longest continuous round of poker at 80 hours. That's 3 1/3 days. Known as "the Unabomber" for his trademark hoodie and shades, Laak is a ubiquitous presence on ...

Retired Cop Wins $1 Million Playing Poker

(Dec. 19) -- When Mike Kosowski started playing online poker after retiring from the New York Police Department in 2004, he never thought it would amount to much. But today, he's $1 million richer, reported the New York Post. Kosowski, who was injured as a first responder on the 9/11 terror attacks, took up the card game out of boredom. "With my injury I was getting lethargic, out of shape," he told the Post. "My wife noticed this." While he was watching poker on TV one day, his wife challenged him to beat Daniel Negreanu, one of the world's top poker players. "She said, 'What do you ...

Poker Star Walks Line Between Shy and 'Jerk'

Poker Star Walks Line Between Shy and 'Jerk'

LAS VEGAS (Nov. 6) -- Perched on the fringes of a crowd packing a wind-swept balcony facing the Strip, the man almost universally regarded as the greatest poker player of his generation would be easy to overlook just days before what could be his greatest victory yet. He looks innocent, at least until his huge brown eyes begin darting here and there, examining, assessing, calculating. Soon, a placid stare is replaced by a million-dollar smile, the kind of flash that shows why so many are betting that he will be the global icon the young sport so desperately needs. Laura Rauch, AP Phil Ivey ...
