HOUSTON -- Police are trying to determine how a Houston kindergartener got a loaded gun that he brought to an elementary school, where officials say it accidentally fired when it fell from his pocket as he sat down for lunch, wounding himself and two other students. Some parents said the incident has made them think twice about safety at the school and they wonder if additional security measures, including extra officers and even metal detectors, are needed. School district officials said extra security would be in place Wednesday to allay parents' fears. Houston Chronicle / AP A ...

The FBI took to the air today to assist the Long Island serial killer investigation. The federal law enforcement agency is using high-tech planes and helicopters equipped with high-resolution cameras to take aerial images of beach areas where at least eight sets of human remains have been found in the past four months. "The aviation bureau [previously] identified a significant number of items that aren't natural to the area," Nassau County Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said at a 7 a.m. media briefing today. To Discourage Public Urination, Australian City Introduces Open-Air Urinal

After a city official described its urine-soaked streets as a "disgusting mess," open-air urinals are being introduced into the downtown area of Sydney, Australia, to discourage drunks from peeing in public. The al fresco toilets, also seen in some European and Canadian cities, are aimed at stopping people from urinating on residential doorways, in bank ATM lobbies and on the streets. Sydney's center apparently is so plagued by public urination that the local council claims it faces a yearly clean-up bill of $7 million, and it's desperate to stem the tide. Lack of Police Blamed for Crime Wave Gripping Egypt

CAIRO -- Gunmen kidnapped a grandniece of Anwar Sadat and demanded a ransom. In one southern city, robbers didn't bother to wait until dark to target pedestrians. In another, a brawl between two school children led to a gunbattle that killed five. A police state barely three months ago, Egypt has seen crime soar 200 percent since Hosni Mubarak's ouster from the presidency. Murder, violent theft and kidnapping are leading the surge, security officials said. In many ways, this country of more than 80 million has become a free-for-all for criminals taking advantage of a weakened police force ...
