It's not nice to fool Mother Nature. Or is it? If you're not getting enough air, you might want to spend time sitting under a newly designed artificial tree that converts carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen. In the modern world of urban pollution, we can't seem to grow enough trees to naturally convert carbon dioxide into life-sustaining air -- the process of photosynthesis -- until now. Researchers at New York's Columbia University, working with Influx Studio in Paris, have designed a faux or artificial tree. It's basically a machine fashioned to resemble a dragon blood tree, complete ...
If you're going to spend $10,000 for a cruise, you'd probably want to go someplace scenic and not a giant patch of garbage, right? Well, some people are actually shelling out that much cash for a 20-day cruise to a garbage dump smack dab in the middle of the ocean. The cruise, which takes place July 7 to 27, goes from Honolulu to Vancouver, British Columbia, with the major destination being the North Pacific Gyre -- a vast area of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean that some studies suggest is twice the size of Texas. Before you take your next bite of food, you may want to read this article. After toxic dioxin was found to have contaminated German poultry and pigs, a crisis has ensued for that country's farmers. Nearly 5,000 farms have been shut down, and countries around the globe are refusing to accept German food products. As AOL News' Dana Kennedy reported today, the source of the dioxin is believed to be a German company that is said to have supplied tainted fatty acid to animal feed makers. Surge Desk takes a look at what is considered to be one of the most toxic chemicals ever created by ...
Scientists have long known about the atmosphere's ability to cleanse itself of nasty pollutants such as benzene and methane. But they haven't always understood how nature's cleanser worked. Now, thanks to a new study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, they do. The cleanser, a chemical substance known as hydroxyl radical, is much more reliable than they thought. That means scientists will be better able to predict future pollution levels in the Earth's atmosphere of various greenhouse gases, including methane. NOAA Aidan Colton at NOAA's Mauna Loa Observatory ...
In December, news broke that scientists at the University of Texas School of Public Health found extremely high levels of a class of recently banned flame retardants, PBDEs, in brand-name butter. This adds fuel to the long standing -- and fiery -- controversy about the use of flame retardants in consumer products. Certainly the argument for fire safety is a strong one. However, on the other side of the debate there are a growing number of scientists who are increasingly concerned about the specific chemicals used as flame retardants -- the PBDEs and now their replacements -- pumped into ...
Calling it a "common-sense approach" towards curbing greenhouse gases, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced new regulations on emissions from power plants and oil refineries as a way to fight global warming. In a statement on the EPA's website late Thursday, administrator Lisa Jackson said the rules targeting "the largest industrial pollution sources" would go into effect next year under the Clean Air Act. "We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG [greenhouse gas] pollution that threatens the health and welfare of ...
WASHINGTON - Stymied in Congress, the Obama administration is moving unilaterally to clamp down on power plant and oil refinery greenhouse emissions, announcing plans for developing new standards over the next year. In a statement posted on the agency's website late Thursday, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson said the aim was to better cope with pollution contributing to climate change. "We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG pollution that threatens the health and welfare of Americans," Jackson said in a ...
