Police in Grand Rapids, Mich., say they were able to bust a man on polygamy charges after his first wife noticed he had "defriended" her on Facebook and posted photos of his second marriage. Richard Leon Barton Jr., 34, reportedly met his first wife, Adina Quarto, online and married the Rhode Island woman in 2004. But the couple quickly became estranged after Barton was hauled back to Michigan and imprisoned for violating his parole, The Grand Rapids Press reports. ...
You know you're dealing with a special household when a domestic argument turns into a case of gang assault. But witnesses in Pakistan say that's what happened to polygamist Mian Ishaq, who was beaten up by his first and second wives for allegedly conducting a secret wedding with a fourth wife -- and planning a fifth marriage. Ishaq was reportedly attending a friend's wedding reception with his third wife when his first two spouses, identified as Mehvish and Uzma, arrived with a score to settle, according to The Telegraph. The wives showed up with relatives and reportedly began overturning ...
(Dec. 1) -- Warren Jeffs, the leader of a polygamist sect, appeared in court in Texas today on charges of bigamy and sexual assault, ending the legal battle over extraditing him from Utah. Jeffs, 54, appeared for a 15-minute arraignment in a Tom Green County District Court this morning. He was shown a copy of the indictment against him and was asked if he would like the court to appoint an attorney for him. "I need more time," Jeffs said, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Jeffs faces charges that he married a child under the age of 16 in 2006 while still married to another woman, and ...
(Sept. 29) -- Police have launched a bigamy investigation into a Utah man and his four wives after the polygamist family invited cameras into their home for TLC's new reality show "Sister Wives," which debuted last weekend. The show stars a 41-year-old ad salesman, Kody Brown, and his four wives, 13 children and three stepchildren. Brown is legally married to one of the women, Meri Paul, but he refers to all of them as his spouses. All five are fundamentalist Mormons who call their lifestyle "plural marriage," a practice the official Mormon church outlawed in the 19th century. Video ...
(Aug. 12) -- Utah will have to wait in line before it gets a chance to retry polygamist leader Warren Jeffs. First he's going to a state where prosecution has been more vigorous. Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said he believes the case against Jeffs is stronger in Texas, where he will be extradited. Jeffs, 54, is the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), a Utah-based group that practices polygamy according to the Mormon tradition (the LDS Church disavowed the practice a century ago). Numerous reports allege that the group has arranged marriages ...
(July 27) -- Polygamist Mormon leader Warren Jeffs will have yet another day in court. According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah's Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Judge James Shumate improperly instructed the jury that convicted Jeffs in 2007 of being an accomplice to two counts of first-degree felony rape. In 2001, Jeffs helped marry Allen G. Steed to a 14-year-old girl, Elissa Wall. At the trial, Wall testified that she objected to the marriage and to sex with Steed. Jeffs' lawyers had argued that the judge should instruct the jury that Steed, not Jeffs, was responsible for any ...
SALT LAKE CITY (July 27) -- The Utah Supreme Court on Tuesday reversed the convictions of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs and ordered a new trial. Jeffs, 54, was convicted by a southern Utah jury in 2007 of two counts of first-degree felony rape as an accomplice for his role in the 2001 nuptials of Elissa Wall, then 14, to her 19-year-old cousin, Allen Steed. Jeffs is serving two consecutive terms of five years to life in the Utah State Prison on the convictions, but the high court ruled Tuesday that jury instructions on lack of consent were in error. Jeffs is head of the Fundamentalist ...
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (June 10) -- A Mohave County judge on Wednesday dismissed all Arizona charges against polygamist leader Warren Jeffs after a prosecutor said continuing with the charges would be "impractical." Judge Steven Conn granted Mohave County Attorney Matt Smith's motion to dismiss the four charges of being an accomplice to sexual conduct with a minor. The charges stemmed from two arranged marriages between teenage girls and their older male relatives. They were dismissed with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled on the same set of facts Smith said the two alleged victims in the ...
