Twin Study Finds PTSD Is as Real as It Gets

(Oct. 1) -- It's something thousands of veterans, not to mention Americans from all walks of life, will already tell you: Post-traumatic stress is a legitimate disorder, and trauma is the culprit. Now a new study on twins has reached the same conclusion, and researchers hope to close the door on debate over just how viable a PTSD diagnosis really is. "It's a nail in the coffin," lead researcher Dr. Roger Pitman told Reuters. "It's been argued by some that PTSD is not a bona fide disorder, that these people are just maladjusted and the trauma doesn't have anything to with it." Vietnam War ...

What's Behind the Rise in Military Suicides?

(Sept. 30) -- After four apparent suicides in a single weekend, troops and their families are reeling -- but they need to be braced for more. That was the warning from Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a conference this morning. "The emergency issue right now is suicides,'' Mullen told reporters. "I think we are going to see a growth in that before we see a decline." What's Behind the Increase? In part, it's the fact so many troops have been fighting for so long. The risk of developing mental health problems, most notably post-traumatic stress disorder, ...

Marines Tackle Record-High Number of Suicides

(Sept. 10) -- The U.S Marines, like other branches of the American military, are facing unprecedented levels of both suicides and suicide attempts. Now, the corps is rolling out a comprehensive prevention program that aims to address mental health problems from inside their own ranks. A total of 52 Marines committed suicide last year, and another 154 made attempts. Both figures are the highest on record for the corps, and they even exceed those of other services, including the Army and the Air Force. Now, the Marine motto "leave no man behind" is going to be applied to suicide prevention. ...

Psychedelic Drugs Might Help Treat Mental Illness

(Aug. 18) -- They're illicit, lead to hallucinations and out-there sensations, and can be dangerous and even downright deadly. But illegal psychedelic drugs such as ecstasy, LSD, mushrooms and ketamine might also be able to help treat myriad serious medical conditions, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Now, a new analysis in the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience is adding more scientific weight to a recent surge in studies and reports on the potential benefits of such mind-altering substances. A team of Swiss researchers at Zurich's University Hospital of Psychiatry ...

Thousands of Soldiers Unfit for War Duty

Thousands of Soldiers Unfit for War Duty

More than 13,000 active-duty Army soldiers -- the equivalent of four combat brigades -- are sidelined as unfit for war because of injury, illness or mental stress. In an unmistakable sign that the Army is struggling with exhaustion after nine years of fighting, combat commanders whose units are headed to Afghanistan increasingly choose to leave behind soldiers who can no longer perform, putting additional strain on those who still can. The growing pool of "non-deployable'' soldiers make up roughly 10 percent of the 116,423 active-duty soldiers currently in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands ...
