DHS, Interior Among 5 of the Worst-Run Federal Programs

WASHINGTON -- The Government Accountability Office released its biennial list of the poorest performing government agencies today -- and this year, the Interior Department's management of the nation's oil and gas resources made the list for the first time. This should come as no surprise, given the breathtaking scope of the lapses by the Minerals Management Service that came to light during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The transgressions, catalogued by Interior's inspector general, included gifts, trips and football tickets given to inspectors, who sometimes let oil and gas companies fill in ...

Ronald Reagan Is 'Forever': Stamp Honors 40th President's 100th Birthday

After a string of commemorations marking Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday, the U.S. Postal Service has added its own: A "forever" stamp was issued Thursday in honor of the 40th president. The stamp costs 44 cents, but can be used at any time in the future. "Ronald Wilson Reagan was one of a kind, and it is right that we celebrate his life and legacy with constant reminders attached to millions of letters arriving at homes all across America," said James C. Miller III, a member of the USPS board of governors. The stamp was unveiled at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, ...

Police: Woman Tried to Send Live Puppy Through the Mail

Postal workers in Minneapolis got quite a surprise when a package suddenly moved on its own. Suspicious, they opened it up -- and found a live puppy inside. Authorities say that Stacey Champion, 39, tried to mail the 4-month-old dog from Minneapolis, to Atlanta, in a package with no food, water or air holes, The Star Tribune reported. If postal workers hadn't found the animal, it would have died, officials say. Mailed Puppy Alive & Well at Minneapolis Animal Control: MyFoxTWINCITIES.com "It was supposed to be a birthday gift for a family member," said Minneapolis Police Sgt. Angela ...

Netflix Instant Streaming Officially Bigger Than DVD Rentals

(Oct. 21) -- DVD-by-mail is officially going the way of Saturday evenings spent perusing the video rental shelves. For the first time in its history, movie rental giant Netflix is providing more hours of content via Internet streaming than on DVDs, according to the Los Angeles Times blog Company Town. Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings raised the point during his remarks discussing third-quarter results. "By every measure we are now primarily a streaming company that also offers DVD-by-mail," Hastings said. "DVD-by-mail shipments are still growing, but streaming for us is much larger and ...

Police: Postal Workers Shot Dead in Tennessee

The employees, both women, were found dead this morning in a post office in the small town 50 miles northeast of Memphis. The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office told AOL News that police are searching for a maroon Chevrolet Impala with two men inside, and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm told The Associated Press that investigators were being sent to the scene. Jeff Dew, of the Dennis Dew Termite Co., said his ...

Opinion: Pushing the Envelope

(Oct. 4) -- I am quite possibly the only fossil on the planet who laments the demise of the U.S. Postal Service. Its appeal to raise the price of a stamp a mere two cents was turned down last week, causing the already ailing agency to take a turn for the worse. Over the next decade, the USPS is expected to lose an eye-popping $238 billion. For most of my 30-something friends, this news is greeted with a yawn, if noticed at all. Who cares? We have Facebook, e-mail, Twitter. Well, it leaves me in a state of postal traumatic stress. As far as I'm concerned, when it comes to personal ...

Rate Board Denies Postal Service Price Hike Plea

WASHINGTON (Sept. 30) - The independent panel that oversees the U.S. Postal Service has denied the agency's request to increase the cost of mailing a letter by 2 cents -- to 46 cents. The Postal Regulatory Commission announced its decision rejecting the requested price hike at a news conference Thursday. In July, the Postal Service proposed raising first-class postage from 44 cents to 46 cents as part of a strategy for dealing with a worsening financial crisis. The Postal Service lost $3.8 billion last year, and the agency has been seeking other rate increases as well, including higher fees ...

Opinion: Congress Goes Postal

(Aug. 24) -- Pop quiz: Based on Congress' legislative output over the past year and a half, what do you think is the most pressing issue facing the country? The crummy economy? Terrorist threats? Health care costs? The sorry state of education? National defense? Global warming? Immigration? Answer: None of the above. Nope, the biggest problem facing America today is ... the desperate lack of appropriately named post offices. At least, that's the conclusion you'd draw by looking at bills that made it through Congress to President Barack Obama's signature pen. AOL Source: Author's ...

Post Office Still Looks to Halt Saturday Delivery; Hearings Open July 14

The U.S. Postal Service is still pushing to end Saturday deliveries as a cost savings measure, but its customers are divided on the wisdom of such a move. Hearings on the proposed service changes are set to begin next week. Taking Saturday out of the mix would save as much as $3 billion a year for an operation that is losing money as more business migrates to the Internet. "The reality that folks need to come to grips with is there simply is not enough mail in the system any longer for us to sustain a six-day network," the postal service's vice president for sustainability, Sam Pulcrano, told ...

Post Office Seeks 2-Cent Rate Increase

WASHINGTON (July 6) -- The post office wants to increase the price of a stamp by 2 cents to 46 cents starting in January. The agency has been battered by massive losses and declining mail volume and faces a financial crisis. Postal officials announced a wide-ranging series of proposed price increases Tuesday, averaging about 5 percent, and covering first class, advertising mail, periodicals, packages and other services. Justin Sullivan, Getty Images If a proposed rate increase is approved, it would cost you an extra 2 cents to send a letter beginning Jan. 2. The request now goes to the ...
