Opinion: Why 10 Dems Opposed Repealing the Health Reform They Voted Against

Of the 39 Democrats who voted against health care reform in 2010, just 13 were still in Congress this year when the vote to repeal that same law came up on Wednesday. But of those 13, only three joined 242 Republicans voting to jettison the legislation. The other 10 voted against overturning the very same bill that they voted against passing in March. Why the change of heart? Here, as a reader service, are excerpts from statements each of the 10 made explaining their vote: Jason Altmire, D-Pa.: "I voted against the 2010 health care reform bill because I believe it is a flawed, partisan ...

Opinion: What the White House Left Out of Its 'Pre-Existing Conditions' Report

A report that says nearly half of all non-elderly Americans are at risk of losing their health insurance coverage thanks to a pre-existing condition is enough to get anyone's attention -- even when it's part of a White House political campaign to undermine the Republicans' health care reform repeal effort. But that's the finding of an analysis from the Department of Health and Human Services, which concludes that "129 million people could be denied affordable coverage without health reform." That's because, the report says, between 50 million and 129 million non-elderly Americans have a ...

Poll: Majority of Americans Say Health Care Law Should Stand or be Expanded

Fifty-one percent of registered voters say that Congress should let the new health care reform law continue as is or change it so that it does more, according to a McClatchy/Marist Institute poll conducted Nov. 11-15. Thirty-three percent want to repeal it completely, 11 percent want it changed so that it is less sweeping and 5 percent are undecided. Among those who support the legislation, 16 percent are in the "let it stand" camp while 35 percent believe it should be changed to do more. The Republican congressional leadership included a vow to repeal health care in its pre-election ...

Opinion: Health Reform's Legal Challenge Lacks Any Merit

Opinion: Health Reform's Legal Challenge Lacks Any Merit

(Oct. 15) -- One minute, Christina Turner was enjoying drinks at a Fort Lauderdale bar with some men she'd recently met. The next minute, she woke up on a roadside covered with cuts and bruises indicating that she'd been raped. And this drug-assisted assault was only the beginning of Christina's nightmare. Months later, she lost her health insurance and was unable to obtain new coverage because the anti-AIDS medication given to sexual assault victims branded her with a pre-existing condition. Christina is not alone. Nearly 60 million other Americans have also been branded with ...

Congress Report: Health Insurance Denial Rates Spiked in 2007-09

Two reports out this month shed light on ongoing changes in the health insurance industry. A congressional report released this week shows that the country's four largest health care companies -- Aetna, Humana, WellPoint, and United Health Group -- increased their denials of coverage for people with pre-existing conditions by 49 percent from 2007-2009. This represented a marked increase from previous years, and occurred during a period when enrollments only increased by 16 percent. The House Energy and Commerce Committee, led by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), found that an estimated 651,000 ...

Six Health Care Changes That Go Into Effect Soon

Six Health Care Changes That Go Into Effect Soon

(Sept. 22) -- The wait is over. A new era of health care coverage in America is set to begin this week, when some provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act officially begin to be enforced by law. Many of the changes will be phased in over the next several years, but the debate over whether the legislation is good for the country continues to rage on, especially as the November midterm elections draw near. President Barack Obama spent much of Wednesday touting the legislation's new "Patient's Bill of Rights," and, via the White House website, attempted to combat what the ...

Health Care Law Still Unpopular With 56% of Americans, Poll Finds

Four and a half months after President Obama signed a sweeping health-care-reform bill into law, the overhaul remains unpopular with a majority of Americans, a new CNN Opinion Research survey suggests. The poll, released Friday, shows 56 percent oppose the health law, a small improvement from the 59 percent who said they were against it around the time of its passage in late March. Forty percent said they favor the law, compared to 39 percent in March. The survey of 1,009 adults -- 935 of them registered voters -- was conducted during the first and second weeks of August and has a 3 percent ...

Abortion Rights Advocates "Outraged" at Obama White House Over Health Coverage

By  Lynn Sweet - Politics Daily
Abortion Rights Advocates

A leading abortion rights group called on its members Sunday to pressure the White House to reverse course and make sure abortion coverage is included when new insurance coverage becomes available under the health care law President Obama signed last March. "To our dismay, the Obama administration just announced it will exclude abortion coverage in the temporary health-insurance pools that will transition us into the new health-care system," wrote Nancy Keenan, who is the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "I am outraged that such a decision would come from a pro-choice president that ...

Health Reform: A Year-by-Year Rundown of What Happens and When

The historic health overhaul that President Obama signed on Tuesday (in advance of further "fixes" in a reconciliation bill) will make sweeping changes in our health system. They include new consumer protections, expanded coverage of the uninsured, penalties for people and businesses who don't buy insurance, attempts to control rising costs, and Medicare savings and new taxes to pay for it all. Here is a year-by-year look at what's in store, assuming final Senate passage later this week of a package of amendments to the landmark bill both chambers already have passed: 2010 Adults who can't ...

Health Care Reform: You'll Learn to Love It

Health Care Reform: You'll Learn to Love It

I know you conservatives are upset about the health care reform bill clearing the House, but let me spin it another way for you.Gone are the days when you could pay the doctor with chickens and rutabagas, and those days are not coming back unless we're in a nuclear winter (in which case our current problems will seem small).Who among you can say you haven't looked at Medicare recipients and wished you too were 65 years old? Probably the first time in history that an adult longed for old age. Likewise, Medicaid for the poor may have looked like a pretty good deal if you earned too much to ...
