Arizona would become the first state to require such proof if Gov. Jan Brewer signs the measure into law. Republican Rep. Carl Seel of Phoenix, the author of the bill, said the bill wasn't about opposition to Obama. "This bill is about the integrity of our elections," Seel said. Thirteen other states have considered similar proposals this year. ...
Ousted Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali is in a coma in a hospital in Saudi Arabia after suffering a stroke, according to reports out of France and Tunisia. "He had a stroke, and his condition is serious," an unidentified friend of Ben Ali told Agence France-Presse, which said the 74-year-old went into a coma two days ago. A spokesman for Tunisia's transitional government, who would neither confirm nor deny the report, told AFP that Ben Ali's health would be discussed later today during a Cabinet meeting. But French journalist Nicolas Beau reported that Ben Ali was checked into ...

Amid reports of atrocities and mass graves, four African leaders arrived in Abidjan today in another attempt to persuade Ivory Coast's tenacious President Laurent Gbagbo to step down. Gbagbo has refused to concede to opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, whose victory in the November presidential election has been recognized by the international community. "This second round of talks is supposed to be the last chance for Gbagbo, but nothing is certain," Rinaldo Depagne, a senior analyst for the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, told AOL News today. This has been a year filled with many memorable moments. The political arena has had its share of off-script instances that were oftentimes disastrous but sometimes hilarious. You may have heard about many of them -- from Vice President Joe Biden's f-bomb at the health care reform event to Christine O'Donnell's "separatation of church and state" line to former BP head Tony Hayward's complaint during the gulf oil spill that "I'd like my life back." But there were several other off-script gems this year that you may not have seen. Here are my top 10. 1) Senator, Secretary, What's the ...
KAMPALA, Uganda (Dec. 11) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has "written" a rap song ahead of the February election that's become the most popular ring tone in this hip-hop-loving nation, and now he's looking to copyright his smash hit. There's just one problem: He didn't compose the rhyme; it's a Kinyankole children's song to which Museveni has added the single line, "You want another rap?" -- which is also the song's title. The song's lyrics ignore pressing electoral issues like corruption, high unemployment and rising tribal tensions in favor of a tale about a knife that's traded for ...
"As soon as you think you understand Haiti, that's the moment you can be sure you don't understand anything." PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Nov. 29) -- That Haitian proverb never seemed more true than today. There is so much to understand here, and so little to know. Most of the 19 candidates running for president came together this weekend to denounce the election after reports of widespread fraud. Sunday was an exhausting day that left the country even more confused. It's not clear how the Haitian government, or the international community, will take action to respect their stance. Some in ...
