Miss. Gov. Haley Barbour Rules Out 2012 Presidential Run

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour ruled out a 2012 presidential bid on Monday, saying he lacked the necessary "absolute fire in the belly" to run and wasn't ready for the "all-consuming effort." The announcement was unexpected, given the two-term governor's recent visits to several states with early presidential contests, including Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He also had lined up political advisers for a possible run, and he had tested an economy-focused campaign speech in Chicago last month. The stout governor had even lost some weight as advisers had ...

Trump Downplays Romney's Business Credentials

Washington -- Potential presidential candidate Donald Trump says he's a better businessman than a leading GOP hopeful in 2012, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Trump tells CNN's "State of the Union" that he has a "much, much bigger net worth. I mean my net worth is many, many, many times Mitt Romney." Trump describes Romney as a "small business guy." Trump says he's created thousands of jobs and built a "great company." Romney is a former venture capitalist with a record of turning around failing companies. While heading Bain Capital, he helped launch the Staples office supply chain, ...

Romney Announces White House Exploratory Committee

WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the closest to a front-runner in a wide-open Republican field, took a major step toward a second White House candidacy Monday, formally announcing a campaign exploratory committee. Romney declared that "with able leadership, America's best days are still ahead," vigorously asserting that President Barack Obama had failed to provide it. The Republican, who has been plotting a comeback since losing the GOP presidential nomination to John McCain three years ago, offered himself as the person best able to lead a country struggling to recover ...

Donald Trump Hints at Possible 2012 Presidential Run

NEW YORK -- Donald Trump boots contestants off his TV show with a famous two-word catch phrase: "You're fired." He may want the chance to say the same to President Barack Obama. The real estate tycoon with the comb-over hairdo and in-your-face attitude plans to decide by June whether to join the field of GOP contenders competing in 2012 to make the Democratic incumbent a one-term president. Jefferson's Books Found in Mo. University Library

Dozens of Thomas Jefferson's books have been found in the rare books collection at Washington University in St. Louis. Scholars are now poring through the 28 titles and 74 volumes, searching for the occasional handwritten note from the nation's third president. And librarians say it's possible more of Jefferson's books will be found in the school's collection. The school announced the discovery Monday, on Presidents Day. Librarians say Jefferson's books were sold after his death to settle debts. His granddaughter, Ellen Wayles Randolph Coolidge, bid on many of the books. When she and her ...

Will Tuesday's Elections Spell the End of the Tea Party?

Will Tuesday's Elections Spell the End of the Tea Party?

(Nov. 1) -- Though tea party-backed candidates are expected to win several elections this week and the movement has stolen much of the media spotlight for the past year, Tuesday may spell the end of the movement. That's at least according to Frank Rich, who makes a convincing case of such an outcome in his weekend New York Times column. Rich points out that the movement isn't as big as it has been portrayed in the media: There are only 647 tea party groups nationwide, most with fewer than 50 members, according to a new Washington Post study Rich cites. A CNN poll found that 2 percent of ...
