Presidential Primaries: Why We Need a Better Way to Pick Nominees

Presidential Primaries: Why We Need a Better Way to Pick Nominees

What's the matter with Iowa? That's a question worth asking as news from the Hawkeye state circulates about next year's presidential caucuses, scheduled for Feb. 6, 2012. According to a recent Associated Press dispatch from Des Moines, Mitt Romney and other potential Republican White House aspirants are considering strategies of avoiding or not emphasizing Iowa in their nomination bids. With conservatives, particularly evangelical Christians, so involved in Iowa GOP politics, Romney and someone like Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana (who is on record for wanting "to call a truce on the ...

First New Hampshire Republican Primary Debate Set for June

New Hampshire voters looking forward to the first presidential debate for the 2012 Republican primary need only wait six months: it's been set for Tuesday, June 7, 2011 in Manchester. The candidate showdown, one of the earliest in the election season, will be sponsored by the New Hampshire Union Leader, WMUR-TV, and CNN. It will be aired live on the two TV networks, and live video streams will be offered on CNN.com and WMUR.com, according to a Tuesday press release. The exact location and time have not been announced. "CNN is thrilled to again be working with the Union Leader and WMUR to ...

Reagan Library to Host First Republican Debate for 2012 Primary

What took so long? It's been over a week since the 2010 vote and debate plans are finally being made for the presidential election in two years. The first Republican primary debate is set for spring 2011 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Southern California, The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. "Ronnie would be thrilled that the road to the White House will begin at his Presidential Library," former first lady Nancy Reagan said in a press release. "I look forward to welcoming and watching the top candidates debate the issues next spring." NBC News and Politico will be the ...

Low Democratic Turnout in Primaries Could Bode Well for GOP in General Election

Low Democratic Turnout in Primaries Could Bode Well for GOP in General Election

Many polls have painted a rosy picture for Republican prospects in the November elections, and now the GOP's chances also appear to be boosted by new data from this year's primaries. An American University study released Tuesday finds that the average statewide turnout by Republicans in primary contests topped that of the Democrats for the first time since 1930. Four million more votes were cast by GOP voters than by Democratic ones. Democratic primary turnout, as a percent of the eligible electorate, was the lowest ever recorded during a midterm election, the researchers said. "Given the ...

Conn. Primary to Test Self-Financing Campaign

UNIONVILLE, Connecticut (Aug. 10) -- Linda McMahon – the wrestling entrepreneur and already the fourth most lavish self-funder in American congressional campaign history – has no hesitancy in justifying the $22 million she has spent so far in Tuesday's Republican Senate primary. "I'm glad in this race I've been able to fund it myself and not take any special interest or PAC money," she said Monday afternoon seated comfortably in a booth at the half-empty Caffeine Cafe during an unpublicized smile-and-hand-shake stop on her primary-eve tour of the state. ...

RNC Votes to Change Way it Nominates Presidential Candidates

RNC Votes to Change Way it Nominates Presidential Candidates

The way the GOP nominates its candidate for president will be changed dramatically under a resolution passed Friday by the Republican National Committee. The proposal will move primaries to later dates and require many states to allocate their delegates on a proportional basis, reducing the chance that the nominating process could end early if a candidate prevails in a delegate-rich state, Hotline On Call reported. The earliest contests -- in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada -- will be moved back from early January to February, according to Hotline. Supporters hope the new ...

Insiders Win Primaries in 2 States, Newbie Stuns Mich.

Insiders Win Primaries in 2 States, Newbie Stuns Mich.

(Aug. 4) -- In a midterm election year that's as anti-incumbent as they come, political stalwarts cruised to victory in primaries in Missouri and Kansas Tuesday night. But in Michigan, voters bucked the trend. Seven-term Rep. Jerry Moran won the Republican Senate nomination in Kansas. That clears the way for him in November, considering that the state hasn't elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932. In Michigan, computer millionaire and political rookie Rick Snyder upset a veteran congressman and three others for the GOP nomination for the governor. ...

Opinion: Elections Are for Rich People

(June 10) -- Would Meg Whitman have won the California primary for the governorship if she hadn't spent $71 million of her own money on her campaign? Probably not -- since she was running against another mega-millionaire, Steve Poizner, who spent $25 million of his own money on his campaign. That's almost $100 million spent to buy a millionaire the chance -- just the chance -- to run for office. For a job that pays slightly higher than $150,000. John Corzine. Michael Bloomberg. Mitt Romney. By now, we're used to ridiculously rich people spending ridiculous sums on campaigns. These people are ...

Sharron Angle: The 5 Reasons Everyone's Talking About the New Tea Party Darling

Newly minted Nevada Republican Senatorial candidate Sharron Angle, backed by the Tea Party, is very much the lightning rod. A former school teacher and member of the Nevada Assembly, her insurgent primary win last night has been embraced by both conservative and liberal political observers, the latter because they believe she will make for an easily-defeatable opponent to unpopular incumbent Nevada Senator and Senate Majority leader Harry Reid. What has Angle done to earn such staunch supporters and mocking detractors, aside from being the enduring "no" vote on the Nevada state assembly? Surge ...

Opinion: Primary Commentary Roundup

(June 9) -- Editor's note: Tuesday's primaries sparked a wide range of commentary on the meaning of the races. We've gathered up a sampling. What Anti-Incumbent Rage? I am starting to wonder if the real story -- the one we are making too little of -- is that the primaries are showing much more ideological change in the GOP than among Democrats. ... The bottom line is that the Republicans are now a very homogeneous, conservative party. The Democrats remain a lot less liberal than the Republicans are conservative. -- E.J. Dionne, the Washington Post. Not Such a Big Day for Women By my count, ...
