Ranks of Millionaire College Presidents Grow

(Nov. 15) 00 The club of private college and university presidents earning seven figures is getting less exclusive. Thirty presidents received more than $1 million in pay and benefits in 2008, according to an analysis of federal tax forms by The Chronicle of Higher Education. More than 1 in 5 chief executives at the 448 institutions surveyed topped $600,000. Most of the pay packages were negotiated before the full force of the recession. But even if the numbers dip slightly in next year's survey, executive pay is expected to keep climbing over the long term as colleges compete for top ...

Apple Tablet and Kindle: Will E-Textbooks Catch On?

Textbooks have always been synonymous with college, but that could change with the coming schoolyear. The student-textbook relationship may be rapidly approaching its day of reckoning, as high-tech gadgets that emulate and enhance the textbook experience hit the market. The competitionThe Amazon Kindle and the forthcoming gadget from Apple could be the first devices to make a considerable dent in the textbook market. Target: Michelle Obama

Target: Michelle Obama

The other day I received an e-mail from a 77-year-old female reader who wondered the following:David, What is your concept of Michelle Obama's statement about the first time being proud of America? To me, it seems like she has a dislike of America. This sentiment is currently being manufactured for political gain by the Tennessee Republican Party, who has apparently decided that Michelle Obama is the next Reverend Wright. You see, they've put together a catchy little "ad" that replays the would-be First Lady's sound-bite remark over and over again, interspersed with average white Americans (and ...

Michelle Obama in the Spotlight

Michelle Obama in the Spotlight

As Barack Obama's star continues to rise (super-delegates are defecting en masse to his banner), every aspect of his life will come under increasing scrutiny. And in today's political climate, such scrutiny extends to the candidate's spouse. Thus, Michelle Obama has become the focus of intense attention as of late. First, Barack Obama was forced to douse several fires when his wife proclaimed, "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." Many (particularly conservatives) questioned this apparent lack of patriotism and egregious negativity in the would-be first lady. ...

'America's First Black President' Update

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
'America's First Black President' Update

That's the moniker that novelist Toni Morrison bestowed upon Bill Clinton. Indeed, many African Americans felt heartened by Mr. Clinton's time in office, going so far as to believe that during his tenure they fared better than they had under any other modern president. But is that perception true? In today's edition of Slate, an article by Melissa Harris-Lacewell, a Princeton University Professor of Politics and African American Studies, explodes the claim that Bill improved the lives of America's black population in anything other than symbolic import. Salient bit:As Clinton performed ...
