Prop 8 Talking Points on Same-Sex Marriage for Your Next Dinner Party

In the 10 days since U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker issued his landmark same-sex marriage ruling in California, there has been an astonishing amount of public debate over the topic, his decision, the Constitution and the role of popular will as expressed in the law. Much of the debate has been interesting. A lot more of it has been downright silly or just plain cruel. In drawing out Americans for their views on marriage and equality, Judge Walker's gauntlet has unintentionally but embarrassingly exposed, from sea to shining sea, some fundamental misunderstandings about the law and power a...

Prop. 8 Overturned: Read Judge Walker's Full Decision Here

(Aug. 4) -- In a historic ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker on Wednesday struck down California's Proposition 8, which defined marriage in the state as being solely between a man and a woman. "Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Here is the full ruling, via LGBT news blog Good As You: Prop 8 Rulin...

And the zealots have shouted up and down the great Golden State and beyond. Now, the fate of same-sex marriage in California (and beyond) is in the lap of one man, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, a veteran jurist who has painstakingly shepherded the high-profile constitutional fight through its trial stage. With closing arguments now complete, with relative silence returned to the federal courthouse in San Francisco, all that is left for the jud...

Proposition 8 Trial: Defense Closing Arguments [QUOTES]

After impassioned and pragmatic arguments on behalf of the plaintiffs, attorneys in the landmark Proposition 8 trial took to the floor this afternoon with just as much vigor to defend the constitutionality of California's controversial ban on gay marriage, which won 52% of citizens' votes back in November 2008. Arguing for the defense in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, attorney Charles Cooper stressed the role of traditional male-female marriage in procreation and child-rearing. As quoted in the The Guardian: The historical record leaves no doubt, your honor, none whatsoever, that the central purpo...
