Yale University Police Investigate Report of Forced Drinking and Nudity

Police at Yale University are investigating a report of a "naked party" held off-campus by a senior society that may have involved forced, heavy drinking and possibly even a sexual assault, according to a school publication. The party was held Feb. 19 by the Pundits, Yale's senior prank society, the Yale Daily News reported. About 50 people attended the party during which they allegedly were told to disrobe. The party was part of the Pundits' "tap" process which involves "tapping" someone whom they want to invite to become a member. "The biggest problem, and what was dis-inhibiting people, ...

Opinion: When Political Pundits Go Bad

Opinion: When Political Pundits Go Bad

(Nov. 2) -- If there's one certainty after this election, is that political pundits will be out in full force, offering their expert opinions on what it all means, and boldly predicting the future health and well-being of the two political parties. Should anyone listen to them? Or would you be better off heading over to the local fortune teller? Given the track record of some pundits, that's a tough call. Consider how well the punditocracy did after the last big election in 2008. That one saw President Barack Obama win and Democrats expand their majorities in the House and Senate. And it ...

Opinion: How About Some Accountability for Pundits?

(Sept. 29) -- As the critical midterm elections approach, it seems every columnist, blogger or tweeter feels the need to predict what will happen. This year, most everyone agrees that the Democrats are in trouble and that the Republicans will make strong gains. The disagreements come in trying to forecast how lopsided the results will be. Anyone who engages in this prediction game has his or her own set of criteria, as well as a political prism through which those criteria are viewed. No matter what happens, some of these prognosticators will be wrong, some of them very wrong, and yet none ...

Breaking Down Forbes' 2010 'America's Top-Earning Talking Heads' List

(Aug. 16) -- $958 million to gab? That's the collective total income of the 13 big names appearing on the 2010 Forbes' list of "America's Top-Earning Talking Heads." With $315 million in earnings between June 2009 and June 2010, daytime television host and media proprietor Oprah Winfrey topped the chart, nearly quadrupling her nearest competitor. According to Forbes, "the Queen of All Media" has made much of her fortune outside her television show, cashing in on ventures including her magazine, website, radio channel and production company. Other notable names appearing among the top ...

Robert Gibbs Defines Obama Phrase, 'Wee-Wee'd Up'

By  Patricia Murphy - Politics Daily
Robert Gibbs Defines Obama Phrase, 'Wee-Wee'd Up'

President Obama told supporters Thursday, "There is something about August going into September where everybody in Washington gets all wee-wee'd up!" If this confused you, read on. On Friday, a reporter in the White House press corps asked press secretary Robert Gibbs to define "wee-wee'd up," and he obliged. "I think 'wee-wee'd up' is when people get nervous for no particular reason," Gibbs said. He explained that pundits and Obama watchers also became unnecessarily worked up in August 2007, "when the rap on the president and the campaign was, 'He's faring poorly in Iowa and can't win the ...

Want to be a Talking Head? Being Attractive Doesn't Hurt

Want to be a Talking Head? Being Attractive Doesn't Hurt

Flip through the cable news networks on a given day, and you are likely to find an increasing number of very attractive female anchors and pundits discussing politics. Mind you, I have no statistics to back this up (how would one compile such stats?), but I doubt most viewers would dispute this trend. We've all heard stories of the TV producer who asks for a head-shot before booking the guest. This, of course, begs the question: Are looks becoming more important than expertise or knowledge in the news and political analysis business? On one hand, many talented writers and pundits just happen ...
