Race in America: 5 Take-Aways From the 2010 Census

The Census Bureau has released its final figures for the 2010 count, revealing new details about the makeup of the 308.7 million people in the United States and how they live. Here are five insights about America's racial mix that emerge from the report: 1. The geography of race The minority population, driven by a 43 percent increase in Hispanics, grew in all four regions of the country. But it grew most in the West. Nearly half of the West's population of 33.9 million is now minority. That is largely due to California, which also has the largest minority population of any state: 22.3 ...

Secessionist Gala Opens Old Civil War Wounds

A "Secession Ball" marking the 150th anniversary of the moment South Carolina chose to secede from the United States drew protesters along with ballroom dancers in the latest episode of America's festering conflict over race and the history of the Civil War. About 300 South Carolinians, the vast majority of them white, gathered in hoop skirts and white gloves in Charleston where the ball took place Monday evening. The group, which included two state legislators, re-enacted the 1860 secession convention and sang "Dixie." They insisted that the event was meant to celebrate their ancestors, not ...

Segregation Drops to Lowest Level in a Century

WASHINGTON (Dec. 14) -- America's neighborhoods became more integrated last year than during any time in at least a century as a rising black middle class moved into fast-growing white areas in the South and West. Still, ethnic segregation in many parts of the U.S. persisted, particularly for Hispanics. Segregation among blacks and whites fell in roughly three-quarters of the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas as the two racial groups spread more evenly between inner cities and suburbs, according to recent census data. The findings are expected to be reinforced with fresh census data ...

Teen Racecar Driver Hits Brakes for Driver's License

(Dec. 9) -- Zach Veach has already proven that he can steer a racecar around a track at 140 miles per hour. But his ability to parallel park is about to be put to the test. The 16-year-old racecar driver made a name for himself by finishing fifth in his rookie year in the USF 2000 series, but on Dec. 14 he'll face his toughest challenge so far in the driver's seat -- his road test. Veach started racing go-karts at age 12 (some kids start as young as age 5) and quickly sped to the top of the youth racing circuit, landing a coveted spot on the Andretti Autosport team last season. But despite ...

Grant had been riding BART Jan. 1, 2009, when he was shot while he was sitting down on a train platform and in police custody. Four days before the jury rendered its verdict, Mehserle released a written apology to the public expressing remorse for the killing. "For now, and forever I will live, ...

Gawker's Christine O'Donnell 'One-Night Stand' Story Denounced by Left, Right

(Oct. 28) -- Did Gawker just cross the line, big time? The Manhattan-based gossip website published a piece today by an anonymous author who purports to have had a one-night stand with Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell on Halloween night three years ago. The piece had been something of a smash hit for Gawker, at least traffic-wise, receiving more than 180,000 page views in less than two hours, according to partner website Jezebel. But the salacious nature of the account coupled with the timing of its release (less than a week before the election) has brought about swift ...

The Color of Legalized Pot? California's Prop 19 Ignites Intraracial Tension

(Oct. 26) -- We all know the stereotypes: Opponents of marijuana are people with short hair, khaki pants and light skin who like a good amount of mayonnaise on their white bread, and supporters are... pretty much everyone else. But in California, as everywhere else, the racial lines are blurry, and old stereotypes might prove a poor predictor of how the various populations in the nation's largest, most diverse state will vote when it comes to Proposition 19. As November draws near, there are increasing signs that race will play an important role in the upcoming vote on whether to legalize ...
